Published some cool papers in 2025 (3/3):
Used constant pH molecular dynamics to understand how an enzyme (an E2 ubiquitin conjugation enzyme) activates its substrate.
In short, the E2 active site shifts the substrate pka.

In case anyone is curious, this is @acs.org’s Strategic Plan for 2025-2029.

And other DEIR resources are still on the ACS website. I will say that regardless of the website hiccup, there is an opportunity for ACS to say / plan something when a lot of organizations have been silent. 👀

We know the link to our Inclusion & Belonging page was temporarily broken. It was meant to redirect to our new inclusion and belonging page, which aligns with the ACS strategic plan 2025-2029 released on Jan. 1.

This has now been corrected, and you can access it here: www.acs.org/about/inclus...

I deleted this post because it’s been superseded by an updated website www.acs.org/about/inclus.... I still think the comms surrounding the update were dreadful. I don’t yet know what to think about the updated language—trying to learn from others what the motivation was and what the impact will be

Oh, please just read @jakeyeston.bsky.social's timeline today re: @acs.org as he has much more coherent things to say about their DEI shift/non-shift/claimed augmentation (if not a conclusion, which none of us have AFAIK) than I do

As someone who volunteers for the DEIR roundtable for ACS, I am mad. Big mad. And I will be contacting people directly in the DEIR office about this.

ACS is nonpartisan and doesn’t have affiliation to any political party or their ideologies.

If there is a time to have a backbone, it is right now.

Rarely have I been less surprised than I am by the move of the American Chemical Society to delete its website on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Respect.

The organization that has never taken a stand on anything has continued that trend.

Given the current state of chaos at the NSF, there is a large degree of uncertainty regarding our REU. However, we are hoping that the REU continues and are acting accordingly. We will do our best to keep applicants informed.

The Pseudoenzyme β‐Amylase9 From Arabidopsis Activates α‐Amylase3: A Possible Mechanism to Promote Stress‐Induced Starch Degradation Starch accumulation in plants provides carbon for nighttime use, for regrowth after periods of dormancy, and for times of stress. Both ɑ- and β-amylases (AMYs and BAMs, respectively) catalyze starch ...

Exciting new work from the undergrads in the lab! You may have heard about pseudokinases, but do you know there are pseudoamylases? We describe the structure and activity of the pseudoamylase BAM9 and how it regulates alpha-amylase activity. 🧪https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/prot.26803
