It's with profound sadness that I have to share that Dean Martin, a nearly charter member of the USF Chemistry department, passed away this morning. 93 Years young, Dean came to @usf.edu in 1964 and had in invaluable impact on our department and countless alumni. #chemsky

Fast forward 44 years, transitions from academia to industry back to academia, the good fortune to have discovered a number of clinical candidates and a few approved drugs, I’m now the chair of a Department of Chemistry where I get the privilege of hearing from unhappy people every day! 🙃

Thought I wanted to be a doctor. Pointed out to my girlfriend I didn’t like dealing w/ unhappy people, & she astutely noted “sick people are unhappy.” Next semester took organic chemistry & realized I could discover medicines to help human health & not deal w/ patients. Never looked back!

Agreed, but the title of the argument was “your favorite team.” What if my team is Tulane? And my main point, that a school banning obscenities is not Congress establishing a law, still stands.

The first amendment says that Congress can’t create laws abridging free speech. It’s already a stretch to equate a public school with Congress, but it’s impossible to do so for a private school.
