Runstraat, Amsterdam in 1993 and today.

When you stop designing streets around cars, people take over.

If you want seamless bike-to-train travel to actually work, start with the basics: put ample bike parking right next to the platform. Convenience isn’t a bonus - it’s the whole point.

Right in the heart of the city what would be car parking in the UK is instead space for bike parking, greenery, and outdoor dining. When you make city centres safe and welcoming with cycle routes in every direction, you don't need endless car parks. Cities thrive when places are built for people.

One of the Netherlands best daily spectacles is the school run: every weekday at around 08:00, streets in cities, towns, villages, as well as in the countryside, fill up with children cycling to school. Made possible by safe, seamless bike infrastructure and plentiful school bike parking.

Ever been riding with someone new to biking or from out of town and you feel it's your personal responsibility to protect them and keep them safe the entire ride?

Would be really great if our cities felt like this.

Cities spend millions on plastic flex posts that get flattened in a week. Meanwhile, the cheapest, most effective design tool is a boulder. They protect people, enforce behavior, and actually survive doing their job.

Recommendation 14: (bullet#3) recommend universal on-road cycle training for all primary and secondary school pupils up to Bikeability Level 3.

Recommendation 14: (bullet#3) recommend universal on-road cycle training for all primary and secondary school pupils up to Bikeability Level 3.

Most young Londoners never learn to drive, so on-road cycle training is
often their only realistic first-hand exposure to the Highway Code and live traffic conditions.
Yet TfL funds cycle training at a level that reaches only around a third of pupils, leaving the majority without the skills to cycle safely, independently, or at all

A clear gap in VZAP2 strategy: no targets for cycle training, while it sets clear targets for safer streets, speeds & vehicles.
2/3 of pupils receive NO training
Thank you for Recommendation 14: universal on-road cycle training for all primary and secondary school pupils up to Bikeability Level 3

Social media graphic with statement from Caroline Russell AM on Vision Zero Action Plan 2 with pale green background and a strip across the top showing a diverse group of people walking, wheeling, riding a bike and using a walking stick:

“Collisions, never ‘accidents’, happen daily. They happen when people make mistakes. Whoever slips up, whether it’s a tired child scooting home or a weary person at the wheel of a car or lorry, the price should not be death or life-changing injury. I’m glad to see the Mayor and his teams understand that to achieve Vision Zero we need to create city streets where no one is harmed when, inevitably, mistakes are made.

“Too often there has been a culture on our roads where speeding, distraction and risky driving are treated as acceptable, when in reality they can have devastating consequences. It’s encouraging to see VZAP2 clearly challenge that way of thinking and recognise that changing the culture around driving has to be part of the solution.

“I love the new ideas for ‘hospital zones’ and ‘evening streets’ building on the success of School Streets to reduce road risk and improve air quality. I’m pleased to see that side road zebras, reminding drivers to give way to people crossing, will also be piloted.

“VZAP2 emphasises partnership working between TfL, the Met and the boroughs not only to create safer more inclusive streets, but also to provide support for bereaved families and crash survivors through effective collision investigation along with routine challenge of ‘fatal four’ offences: speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone.

“The Mayor's VZAP2 Plan has set out clear actions and targets, and what matters most now for Londoners is delivery. I will continue my work on the Assembly to scrutinise his progress closely and ensure that every policy set out is followed through and fully implemented so we can end the trauma of road harm in our city.”

So good that the Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan 2 is finally out – with strong recommendations on culture shift and reducing danger.

What matters now is delivery. I’ll keep pushing at City Hall to make sure TfL gets on with urgency making London’s streets safer for everyone. 🧵[1/7]

Some might find a couple of my slides controversial 😬

I'll publish them on @cityinfinity.bsky.social next week.

It’s enormously concerning that, at the very moment when we need to be driving forward with deep decarbonisation and mobilising all our productive forces to deliver heavy investment in global warming adaptation, most British politicians are losing their nerve.

Me walking a bike and a bike lane with two kids sitting on it

Don’t consider myself an advocate, urbanist, activist or part of some fringe group. Just a dad that was tired of their kids losing their childhood independence at the hands of a toxic and normalized car culture

Quite sad that wanting kids to walk/bike/roll safely to school is considered radical.

Flashback to our billboard we did with the good people at @visionzerovancouver.ca this past Fall. Was incredible to see these messages out in the world.

Traffic levels are rising & most London motor vehicle journeys could be done relatively easily other ways (says TfL analysis). So to bus industry, lobbyists & peers in the Lords, we say: the common issue is motor traffic levels & failing to dealing with that impacts buses and walking and cycling.

Abingdon's Radley Road neighbours angry at parking ban to speed up buses The restrictions to parking have been made to help speed up bus journeys along the road.

I love the way expensive new roads are celebrated, even if in business case terms, they only shave a few seconds of journeys.

But when it is a modest scheme to help to get buses moving, that same argument is deployed against.

Sorry Bub, it's not your road outside.
