Descent II Box Art
It has the iconic Descent blue orb shield pickup in front of a background of a black and white cookie. In the foreground is a shiny gold foil claw robot from Descent I that never appears in Descent II. This picture doesn't do it justice, because it's really shiny and reflective in real life.

Shout out to the really cool looking shiny gold foil cover of Descent II that features a robot that's not actually in Descent II.

My space exploration dream is to see a rover land on Europa, dig through the ice, drop into the water below, and then get absolutely mauled by an alien space squid on camera.

I got into Falcon at a very specific time in my life, and I sometimes wonder if I hadn't done that, there's a decent chance that I would just never have gotten into games like DCS years later. Having that base I built up from Falcon was foundational to all sims I've played since.

The Apache has made me realize something about myself and DCS> I don't like older modules because they're more difficult and don't hold your hand. I like them because I don't have to study 15 pages of a manual to figure out how to make a flight plan and deal with three layers of route planning tools.

It's really cool but man fuck all this shit I'm too old for spending time learning shit for this game.

That's my issues with the C-130 and Apache. I really like them, but there's like 60% of the module I completely don't want to fucking bother with so I feel like I'm ignoring a mess in a room or something.

The payoff from learning is just not there for me for clicking through pages and programming CARPs and flight plans and routes but if I don't learn it I feel like I'm neglecting something.

Not me, but it's something I've been thinking for a few years now about DCS and it was funny to see it happen to somebody else.

Sure, I have (strong) opinions on the subject, but IMO that's not relevant to the Initiative. Either way, the Initiative folks knocked their opening presentation out of the park, nipping a lot of the biggest arguments in the bud, and inoculating them against inevitable industry arguments.

I still don't want to get my hopes up that something good might happen, because there's still plenty of wiggle room for this to backfire or be otherwise sabotaged by industry interests. E.g. One of the members bringing up lootboxes/gacha/gambling make me nervous because IMO that's out of scope.

I watched the first EU Commission meeting for Stop Destroying Games and while I know Ross had said that he was surprisingly confident about the matter, I was still shocked at how much support it ALREADY has among the EU Parliament members.

Black and white cloud texture.

Black and white cloud texture.

This is the texture in question. It's not even square, so it gets squished vertically as a texture and even then somehow it looks as good as it does?

Then I decided to throw it on a bunch of planes and quads to see what would happen and all of a sudden it looks like a JRPG title screen! It's just one really basic cloud texture but it looks this good with this little effort? I feel like I'm discovering textures for the first time.

Speaking of textures, I took a photo of some clouds yesterday because I was wondering if I could isolate them and turn it into a texture. Turns out it wasn't that hard, so I threw it on a particle system and was like, wow I accidentally made a half decent waterfall with a silly cloud texture.

I'm already a big fan of the free (free!) Brutal Base pack, so I'm really looking forward to this one!

It really is. I also couldn't stop laughing at the owner impression, that is shockingly accurate in how he talks, sounds, and what he says, to one of the shittiest people I know and I'm so curious now where that voice and accent comes from and how it's so spot on.

I can't recall one off the top of my head but I know in some episodes they've specifically said stun isn't an option. I'm sure the Trekkie in-universe answer is it's unbecoming to look trigger happy, and just an abundance of caution that you don't accidentally explode somebody, but it still bugs me.

There's a lot of tech in TNG that is just insanely "overpowered" to the point of making it a prerequisite of a good story for people to forget they can do that. I've noticed DS9 turns this down by quite a bit and the insane accuracy and strength of starship and handheld sensors comes up much less.

It bugs me how in Star Trek, phasers have a seemingly extremely safe "stun" setting that just knocks people out with no ill side effects. It makes me ask "why don't they just shoot them with the stun setting?" in almost every episode where somebody dangerous is about to get people killed.

Artemis II SLS taking off.

Artemis II SLS taking off.

I love SLS it's such a big dumb parts bin special that actually works. The funniest part is that the SpaceX Booster is actually working pretty well now, and is an incredibly capable launch system, but AFAIK there's no plans to put something more practical on it to take advantage of all that power.

It is very funny to me that for all its faults, SLS has successfully launched 2 missions around the moon, one of them manned(!), while Starship hasn't even achieved orbit yet. A few years ago even I was thinking that Starship would embarrass SLS and oh boy am I glad to have been wrong.

Animated comparison between the two. The difference in crater positions might just come down to me not getting the time exactly correct.

Speaking of Space Engine, I was curious just how close Space Engine would get to this. The SE screenshot was taken around the same time. It's pretty darn close! The real life moon is just slightly more colorful.

Moon's Farside in the Foreground, Earth Beyond

art002e015228 (April 6, 2026) - Seen from behind the Moon during Artemis II, the Moon and Earth align in the same frame, each partially illuminated by the Sun. The Moon’s surface appears in sharp detail in the foreground, while Earth sits much farther away, smaller and softly lit in the background. A faint reflection in the spacecraft window is also visible, subtly overlaying the scene. Though their phases differ, both are shaped by the same sunlight, revealing the geometry of the Sun–Earth–Moon system from deep space. Credit: NASA

As for why Microsoft won't do anything with the game, rumor has it that it was a tax writeoff and as such if Microsoft were to ever acknowledge it, that would mean it wasn't worthless. But mostly, I just think nobody at Microsoft cares, and even if they did, the cost/benefit math wouldn't work out.
