Just finished #HelloSunshine by @keezyyoung.bsky.social and it is absolutely a must-read. The art is gorgeous, the characters are complex, and the story is just ♥️

you know the number one reason people with psychosis end up in the news? it's because someone in crisis went missing and their family is looking for them. i would love it if we got round the clock coverage on that instead. then maybe we'd realize that people are vulnerable, not terrifying
(which is not to say that substance use isn't also heavily stigmatized, btw, but it's not as FUN for the news networks. lots of people have SU disorders, not as many have psychosis. and the more we demonize psychosis, the scarier and more fun and salacious it gets to hear about it, naturally)
actually most people stab due to substance use issues, not psychiatric issues (although obviously they often come in tandem). so why do i hear so much more about someone on meth doing a stabbing if the guy also has a diagnosis of schizophrenia? because it's more salacious and scarier due to stigma
ahh yay hello sunshine was chosen for for inclusion on the 2026-2027 VA Reads list (Virginia Association of School Librarians)! i don't think voting is live yet (winners announced in may) but it's a reader's choice award for kids! very very cool

(none of this is to say you can do this in reverse, btw--you can't figure out who somebody will be based on who they are at age 4, or 9, or even 16. but that doesn't apply to imaginary people, haha. you literally do have their whole lives in your hands as a creator. use it!)
easier to write a 4-year-old when you're not saddled with writing a 4-year-old--because you probably don't know that many!--instead you're writing a person how they were when they were 4, and maybe some of the formative experiences they had that helped them get there, colored with 4-yo-ness
btw I'm not parent (but I love kids and love writing kids and working with kids) the best way, imo, to get a child character right is to figure out who they're gonna be when they're 16, 30, 60. just like any other character. figure out what makes them tick outside of their age and how they get there
and make no mistake that this impacts averages and statistics about it, and thus continues to impact quality of care for *everybody* because the stats are gonna be off if we're only looking at it for certain populations, you know
fatphobia does a hell of a lot of damage to fat people, but it also means doctors overlook stuff that should probably be addressed with thin people, tbh, haha
