The thing is some games like Pokemon Legends Z-A have Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions and their sales are counted separately. If they are added together, Z-A has sold about 12.3 million units, which, while still obviously less than MK World, is relatively close.
The irony is that the game cannot be played in Mainland China, the primary region where Lunar New Year is celebrated.

Is the latter based on the former? yes. Do the two share most of the level design and general asthetics? Yes. But do they play very differently and playing one does NOT mean that you've basically seen everything the other has to offer? I think the answer is also yes.
I don't think it's even like a matter of ''which one is the better Mario 64 experience'' or whatever
instead I honestly just think they should be looked at as two separate games in general
It's kinda like comparing Whomp's Fortress to Throwback Galaxy, but expanded to the scale of full games
Not to mention the stuff you can do that aren't intended. BLJ, first-frame wall kicks, item cloning, parallel universes, grabbing Bowser backwards, making Mario dab in the JP 1.0 version, making Mario's soul leave his body, etc.
In OG 64, you can long jump into a wall kick, you can angle your wall kick to bounce off the wall diagonally, you can acually use the midair kick to adjust your jump as opposed to only prolonging it, you can triple jump wall kick and dive to get on the floating plaforms in Whomp's Fortress, etc.
Some people might think that they're not missing out on much if they played 64DS but not the OG. But I disagree. I think there are quite a number of things in 64 that 64DS doesn't have.
I think more people need to realize that neither Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS should be seen as a replacement for the other. Just like how FF7R shoudln't be seen as a replacement for FF7 and Metroid Zero Mission shouldn't be seen as a replacement for Metroid 1.

Opinion on the boxart aside, is this topic really worth writing an article about?
considering how they removed Sonic Rush music from Generations and didn't remix back 2 back for Water Palace in Crossworlds it's safe to say if they ever bring back Sonic Rush in any capacity it'd have a completely different soundtrack.
