When you hone yourself to look for something, you can get good at finding it -- *really* good. To the point it becomes a pareidolia that spans your entire life. Sometimes it's real, but sometimes...

You don't allow yourself even the whiff of wonder so that when someone inevitably comes along to let you know that actually, that thing you briefly enjoyed is Imperfect In Some Way, you can say WHEW at least I wasn't a sucker like THOSE naifs! But you're also kind of fucking miserable!

There's a tendency to race to see who can jade themselves fastest on any given development. People want to beat you to the punch, to have had the correct answer far in advance to look smarter, savvier, wiser. By doing so as a habit, you rob yourself of the ability to feel basic joy and curiosity.
