I have been in a ebay journey of buying random old audio stuff and fixing them up. My findings are:
Disc drives are sensitive be gentle. You cant fix them if they dont want to be fixed. Respect their autonomy, communicating clearly, and maintaining support from a distance.

As a not so user friendly downgrade maybe peek at mpd, and ncmpcpp. It does tags and lyrics, album art look ups using last.fm . I think there's mpd plugins to do stats tracking and popularity of songs. There's also lots of mpd player apps for phones.
