CISA definitely did run videos and campaigns for MFA in the pre-Noem era. I saw them in airports.

Not comparable in scope and volume, but it happened. It used to be my job to help in a small way with that

If the gov evangelized MFA the way people do for LLMs, I’d be generationally wealthy. Alas.

Sources aren’t safe when surveillance is for sale Congress must close the loophole that turns journalists’ and sources’ data into a storehouse for state spying

If the government can buy a map of movements by journalists and suspected leakers, "confidential sources" can’t exist.

Congress should pass the Government Surveillance Reform Act and close the data broker loophole once and for all.

Every single person who wrote about how you "can't trust signal" had better be calling their congressional representatives.

Also, everyone else.

If you have sincerely held concerns about government surveillance, now is the time.

Especially in light of the credential stuffing activity. I too would begin by gaining access to old, authentic accounts and building from there.

You could argue that this is already the case in the US. It just doesn’t look like a professionalized call center or Russian/Indian scammer company. It looks like influencer activity. Only way I see coding playing a part is if the US adopts A Russian posture on cybercrime and hack-back ops

With the posts going around showing the banking coordination, it’s possible. But to me, that shows ignorance of the risk that account is assuming, not a sign of a thoughtful criminal actor

Possibly. But I would be surprised. I think scammers don’t need to hire people for that kind of role. They get better results by finding people who are more driven to the ostensible cause than by profit.

Sometimes scammers work accounts in shifts.

Or perhaps he is one person who contains Mah-multitudes.

Well, algorithm or no, BlueSky is like any other social platform. It’s hard to gain a community/following. When you do find something that works, you’ll keep doubling down on what ”works.” To admit this effort has been even partially, unknowingly in service of fraud would shake that foundation

The intended implication of the above post is not that you are doing the thing I describe. But that social media makes that nuance really challenging.

That may be. But as frustrated as I am about these scams hurting people, you do need to give folks an off-ramp of sorts. They won’t ever change if the social pressure is a choice beteeen admitting you’re an idiot or doubling down. Gotta have a third option of grace, but that’s hard on social media

Indeed. I do wish she would take a step back and look at the situation in totality. No one is immune to these scams. But when the nature of the interaction/relationship begins to change to resemble a scam, people double down as at least as often as they remove themselves

It’s hard to fathom from the outside. But it happens to people of every demographic, just for a different cause/reason. I wish everyone would be more open to reconsidering their choices when new information is presented.

I also don’t assume it’s a he per se. It may be one or multiple people.

Not often you get to opt-in to scams though. This keyword consent is an interesting approach

Often, scammers tip their hand more than they need to. Anyone who doesn’t nope out of the sketchy interaction immediately is a more likely mark. Really helps them cut the search space by being so open about it.
