As Storm Dave (or "Påskeorkanen") continues its eastward movement through Scandinavia, we're starting to tally up the damage done in Denmark.

With peak recorded gusts of 36 m/s, possibly higher unrecorded, it brought with it some intense damage. Damage is provided below.

The Jels Event back on August 24, 2024

After over a year of analysis, DNSROP has gained confidence in calling the event tornadic, and thus will be listed as such in DNSROP's survey log. This comes after a exhausting remote survey of the event, its damage points, and any media related to it.

Now, What's to Come? (2/2)

By the turn of the year (2026), DNSROP will work to improve its effect on the science community and public outreach/visibility. And biggest of all: a budget.

Now, What's to Come? (1/2)

As the season changes into autumn, and severe weather season comes to an end, DNSROP will be heading into a overwintering period. But, @topscandinavia.bsky.social will remain active, issuing tornado outlooks for any relevant days.

Hail Activity

In strong contrast to 2024, 2025's season featured minimal hail activity, with the largest stones reaching 2,5 cm (~1 inch) in size on two occasions, namely June 1 and August 23. In 2024, by contrast, the largest stone reached ~10 cm, four times the size of 2025's largest.

Tornado Activity (1/2)

With over 20 reports (21), the tornado count so far is hugging the upper-bound of DNSROP's forecast of 14-22, marking a significantly more active season than initially thought. This is in part due to a rather favorable end to July/start August...

Rather strong tornado for a region not previously known for such intensity.

This is why @topscandinavia.bsky.social exists. Whole of Scandinavia deserves tornado outlooks - not just for Denmark.

DNSROP and @tornadoproj.bsky.social are now back online and active.

Thanks to everyone for their patience.

The DNSROP and TOP projects will be put on halt until further notice; citing technical difficulties.

When the projects come online again, new refinements will be made, most notably to the TOP @tornadoproj.bsky.social graphics.

Sorry.

Day 1 risk: a low risk was maintained, but locally higher wind shear corridors from Aarhus to Hjørring may constitute a higher risk in future outlooks.

CFS forecasts suggest the same from July to August this year. Using this, we can publish a rough estimate of the tornado count for 2025.

From May to September, the likely number of tornadoes in Denmark will be around 14-22 tornadoes (2004-2024 average of 14.5 tornadoes).

2024, 2022 and 2019 (etc.) were active storm-wise, but what did they have in common?

A quasi-stationary Icelandic low-pressure area, below-average precipitation and temperature anomalies over the North Sea, and higher precipitation and temperature anomalies over Denmark and Sweden.

Now that tornado season is starting in the US, what is the forecast like here in Denmark?

Here is a forecast from DNSROP.
