But I don’t think Microsoft is going to stop making hardware, they’re just not making their software limited to it. My guess is they’ll still make Xbox, as they make computers. And… they may not get that 30% from MS store, but without exclusives they get 70% from PSN, Nintendo, Steam and Epic 😅

In part because consoles as we know them will eventually die. But mostly because investors don’t care about all this 😅 The decision to buy Activision (because of King, not because CoD) was a clear statement that Microsoft wants to make money with software, not hardware.

Microsoft didn’t care about Xbox until recently. As u said, they’ve always had the resources and yet Xbox has had some markets abandoned since the beginning. So they’re not going to spend 300 millions in a game to revive the console, they will do it to sell it everywhere they can.

Those new gamers are entering… by their phones.
And that strategy could have worked in the age of physical media, when u sold console and games, switched to other platform and rebought the games on a reseller store. But nowadays dad’s not going to sell his PSN account and repay every game.

And we can’t forget xCloud. If in… let’s say 10 years, game streaming achieves good quality, Microsoft will be in a much better position than Sony. They are already shifting to that scenario with the PS Portal and PS Plus.

Yeah, that can be tricky for Microsoft unless they find a way of erasing the Xbox/PC barrier in the Microsoft Store… But the Steam/Epic thing seems pretty possible to me. There are handhelds now that do it. If they open the platform it’s almost a logical step.

With Xbox 360 they already wanted to make it “the device” everybody will have at their living room, because that’s what Wii achieved. Nowadays, with the rising costs & risks of AAA games, either you dominate the market of hardware (as Sony does) so u make profit, or you adapt to a new market.

There were rumours about this months ago, saying that for Microsoft the next Xbox is supposed to set a “new hardware standard” that can even be made by other manufacturers. Xbox will be like Surface, and it won’t be strange to see an “Xbox” made by Lenovo. Basically, a PC in your living room.

So the only way Xbox can survive as a brand is if it forgets about being a console with exclusives and turns into a platform to play anywhere, and launch consoles like they launch pc notebooks: as a universal hardware, not a closed environment.

There’s no way Xbox can get more console hardware market, not even giving away consoles, because the value of Playstation is not the PS5, but the PSN and the libraries of digital games users have there. You can’t sell the console and games and change to Xbox. That battle was lost with Xbox One
