It was only after I'd attended Tai Poutini for pounamu carving training that I discovered what an art trail the road from Greymouth to Westport is. You'd never know simply driving it but just off the highway there are artists and craftspeople galore.

Yes, lovely colour. It's Mohs hardness is around 2-2.5 in comparison to nephrite (the 'common' jade used for pounamu pieces and traditional Maori tools) which is over 6-6.5.

I don't know much really but I believe fuschite is quite brittle so would probably have been of limited value as a tool or weapon by the Maori.

Maybe being a bit overcritical but a tad disappointed in some of the pounamu works on display- designs, finish and bindings. Don't think it's all that hard to go from "that'll do" to "that's well done".
('Course many artists on display are hobbyists like me rather than professionals but . . . )

Went to #ArtInThePark Wonderful display of the talent we have around and about, particularly paintings. Wonderful range of media and techniques.
