BLOOD OF THE IMPERIUM - VARIOUS

A Warhammer 40K anthology: collecting works from Adrian Tchaikovsky, Richard Swan, Jude Reid, Mike Brooks. Just a thoroughly entertaining collection of stories set in the Grimdarkness of the 41st Millennium! The Emperor would be pleased indeed!

THE SCOUR - RICHARD SWAN

I love how the ideas of justice and law are explored in Swan's Empire of the Wolf, and this prequel is no different. It gives us a core trio that are magnetic to follow, and plenty of mystery and action. These little stories are ripe for serialisation!

TRAD WIFE - SARATOGA SCHAEFER

WOW THIS ONE IS AMAZING! Angry, disgusting, visceral, shocking, and truly unputdownable! This one went in directions I never thought it would. Graham is hands down the most despicable character I've ever read. Schaefer is a pure talent!

CHILDREN OF TIME - ADRIAN TCHAIKOVSKY

Third time's the charm! Gripping from the first chapter, this is the definition of epic speculative fiction. The span of time covered and consumed is vast in scale, and the ideas played with are fascinating to watch play out in full. Loved this!

GRAVE EMPIRE - RICHARD SWAN

Re-read in preparation for Steel Gods (and because I have a memory like a sieve), but I don't mind when the book is this entertaining! Nema damn fuck and blast, I love so much about this book and series! Fantasy Horror at its best!

VALUABLE HUMANS IN TRANSIT - qntm

In this collection of high-concept stories, its usually the implications of the ideas explored that carry the weight of the horror that really lives underneath them. Short, sharp, and evokes the same feeling I get when I watch an episode of Black Mirror.

MADE THINGS - ADRIAN TCHAIKOVSKY

A fun little novella about the relationship between humanity and its creations, and the abusive nature of power, Tchaikovsky packs so many themes into a short runtime. There was something, however, that stopped me from loving it, and I can't figure out what.

THERE IS NO ANTIMEMETICS DIVISION - qntm

Containing one of the strongest openings to a book I've read in a long while, this is a mind-melting, terrifying look at entities that cause memory loss and malice. For a book all about forgetting, its certainly very memorable! A full 5 stars!!

THE AUTUMN REPUBLIC - BRIAN MCCLELLAN

A great final book to a great trilogy! These books are true page turners and are so much fun to be in. The characters are all memorable, the action is spectacular and the pacing is always breakneck. Looking forward to starting the follow up trilogy soon!

Review: Wretch: or, The Unbecoming of Porcelain Khaw, by Eric LaRocca | FanFiAddict Wretch is a story not to be read on an empty stomach, or one to be consumed in a low state of being. But, when you do read it, you’ll find LaRocca’s most in ...

I had the "pleasure" - or as pleasurable a story about the void of grief can be - of reading WRETCH by @ericlarocca.com. WRETCH may be LaRocca's most conversation worthy novel to date!

Thanks to @titanbooks.bsky.social for the ARC!

WRETCH - ERIC LAROCCA

One of the most sad, depressing, hopeless books I've read in a long time. An experience hard to enjoy, but one you can appreciate. Exploring grief through the eyes of someone selfish, a taker, a narcissist. LaRocca is wonderful at writing the worst of human emotion!

THE SUN DOG - STEPHEN KING

The most indulgent of the four stories in Four Past Midnight, King follows the idea of "why use one word when 100 will work too?" Still, it's a good King story, furthering his own Castle Rock history and mythos. The Sun Dog in question is scary too!

THE LIBRARY POLICEMAN - STEPHEN KING

This is a properly nasty story, one that starts off in a slightly daft fashion, before growing into one of King's darkest tales. Check the trigger warnings for this one.

There are links to other King stories that did excite me though!

SECRET WINDOW, SECRET GARDEN - STEPHEN KING

Much better than I remember the film being. I often find that the unreliable narrator trope can easily fall flat, but this one didn't. John Shotter got really under my skin, but Mort isn't exactly a shining star either. Good fun!

THE LANGOLIERS - STEPHEN KING

An airport thriller both literally and figuratively, The Langoliers is a great example of King's ability to build a memorable cast, have one of those cast members be completely bonkers, and yet it still feel captivating. Nerve-wracking storytelling!
