seems like gas prices have gone *down* here in Kyoto -- saw a few in the mid-150s today
still disappointed that The Get Up Kids schtick wasn't wearing interesting get ups
first green pheasant I’ve run into in Kyoto
y‘all hep to the new guinea pig trend?
glad they’re keeping this one though
seems like a bad thing to demolish, but what I do I know? I’m not the governor of Kagawa
speaking of which, I haven’t noticed much jump in gas prices here at all. in the U.S. a few weeks back and everywhere shot up fast
a little road-tripping before the term gears up
they're practically living in the park and still barely make ends meet
neolithic guys get pissed if you tell them their cultures are organized by the type of pots and jewelry they made. "we called ourselves the blood hunters" "we conquered villages far beyond this horizon" sorry bud you're the western linear pottery culture now

not an explicit filter, but a de facto one
I had friends whose MA was the filter en route to PhD, but I think people *could* pop in laterally. Most didn't. I had an external MA and then another local one first from my doctoral institution but neither were required. Like others said, though, coming directly from a BA was very very rare
Tokyo report: Haneda and the Keikyu train still grossly warm

Kyoto University has opened up applications for the Hakubi Project, due May 17, 2026.

Please apply or let others know!

and/or working in Japanese academia
What do you wish you knew about the Japanese academic job market? (future or past tense)
I’ll be giving the grad crew at UCSB a talk on that topic on Tuesday and would love to add more than my own musings.
was supposed to be redone the day after I took the photo...but I won't be back to check for a while....
perhaps this?

this was indeed good (and yep, very packed today). the rest of the NGA was wonderful as well
that place is famously associated with anti-racist activism and gets regularly trolled by fans of racism
still sad that Mosquito disappeared (but also amazed at how long the clutch of ramshackle squatted bars lasted)
