They are pigeon proofing the porch of my office today and legit I’m pretty sad. We don’t have a ton of pigeons here. I’m on the second floor so I spent last spring seeing them raise their babies at eye level.

Rock Art: An American Story - SHIPS ON OR BEFORE 4/24/2026 "Rock art is not just a relic, not just a decoration — it is testimony. It tells us who we are, who we have been, and how we might think about our shared future." Stephen Alvarez, photograph...

People can have different political opinions about immigration policy. Political differences are fine, healthy for a democracy.

But if you’re okay with this, that’s not a political opinion. That is a moral failing.

Right? I just made an allusion in someone’s previous post, that maybe he will admit now that in fact the dog’s name is not spelled differently

A gorgeously-written book about wolves & caribou & cold and warming & indigeneity & how to ask questions & when not to & how to see loss & how to witness the beautiful. I knew Neil just a bit years ago, & know his brilliant prose, too hidden, I thought, in Nat Geo. Here is the work unfiltered.

Rest in peace Jim Hunt. I always wondered what would have happened if he’d been President.

How Did the C.I.A. Lose a Nuclear Device in the Himalayas? A plutonium-packed generator disappeared on one of the world’s highest mountains in a covert mission that the U.S. will not talk about.

In 1988 the National Geographic Society celebrated its 100 year anniversary. There was a huge celebration out on its property in Maryland, and one of the events was a geo-cache game. Barry Bishop was on my team and we won, so I’m a little sad to find out he lost a nuclear device in India:

I loved many things about working at Nat Geo. I learned my favorite business saying there: When the elephants are running through the forest, stand behind a tree. 🌳🐘

I remembered the time the editor of a national magazine turned down my request to attend a conference but 2 days later said I had nice legs in front of a photographer in an elevator. 1993.
