Image description: A profile photo of a large, forest parrot perched on a flat, light-coloured surface. The bird has olive-brown feathers with subtle scalloped patterns, a pale crown, and striking flashes of orange and reddish-pink on its cheeks and underbelly. It features a prominent, deeply curved grey beak and dark, intelligent eyes. The background is a soft, out-of-focus lush green foliage bathed in warm, natural sunlight.

Clue: I am the "chatterbox" of the New Zealand bush, often confused with my alpine cousin, the Kea, but I prefer the canopy of the deep forest to the snowy peaks.

Fun fact: These birds are incredibly skilled "engineers." They use their powerful, brush-tipped tongues to drink nectar and their strong beaks to strip bark in search of sap or grubs. They have even been observed using tools, like sticks, to reach hard-to-get food!

Digital drawing in white ink against a black background of two wrens, small, roundish songbirds with short, perky tails. They are facing each other on some branches and one has its mouth open as though talking or singing while the other looks on with smiling approval.

Illustration countdown to #WrensAria publication!

52/52 Wrens are one of my favorite birds. It was a delight to write an entire book about a very plucky & courageous one. I suppose it is a spoiler to post this final drawing which shows Wren being welcomed home, but don't we need some happy endings?

The Emperor Angelfish change color dramatically as they mature, can switch sex from female to male and live up to 20 years. They form small harems on Indo-Pacific reefs, and can eat toxic sea sponges that would harm most other animals.

A worm's-eye view straight up the trunk of a coastal redwood, its deeply furrowed, fibrous bark filling the frame as the tree tapers to a distant crown of feathery green branches fanned against a pale overcast sky. Surrounding redwoods close in at the edges, their canopies forming a broken ring overhead, with soft golden light filtering through the upper foliage, suggesting a forest that has been doing this for a very long time.

Redwood country. There's a version of humility that only comes from standing at the base of something like this.

Image description: A hi-res photo of a relatively large bird (around 47 to 51 cm (19 to 20 in) long) standing on bare, light-brown soil. The bird has soft, smoky-grey plumage, a striking tall crest of feathers raised on its head, and a short, black, decurved beak. Its dark eyes are surrounded by slightly paler grey feathers, and it has dark grey legs.

Clue: This bird gets its name from its loud, nasal, and rather bossy call that sounds unmistakably like it is telling you to "go-away!"

Fun fact: These birds act as the "neighborhood watch" of the African savanna. Because they are so vocal and frequently sound their alarm call when they spot a predator, other animals—and even humans—often listen to them to know when danger is nearby.

We had a lot of rain and I unfortunately missed the best timing, the two chicks are now already fledged! 🥹 👋

However! I managed to find her next nest which is still under construction. It’s cool to see all the spiderweb she’s using to build it 🕸️ 🏗️ 🛠️
