One of the most valuable parts of being at the Summit for Animals is the people.

Connecting with organizations from across Canada who are working toward better outcomes for animals, each with different challenges, but a shared goal.

This is how stronger networks are built.

Because of our volunteers, wildlife across Saskatchewan isn’t facing these challenges alone.

💬 Help us celebrate them:

It’s a reminder that what happens here in our province is part of something much bigger: people showing up, stepping in, and making a difference for both wildlife and communities everywhere.

What most people don’t see is everything behind the scenes, coordination, communication, and the commitment to do things the right way, every time.

This year also carries special meaning for volunteers everywhere.

From late-night calls to long-distance transports, our volunteers are the reason injured and orphaned wildlife get a second chance. Every rescue starts with someone willing to answer the call and follow it wherever it leads.

This week, we’re sharing some of those stories…

Rethinking the “Wolf Lured Dog” Narrative Recent headlines claiming that a wolf “lured” an off-leash dog to its death in British Columbia have been widely shared, and understandably, they’ve sparked concern. But canid experts suggest the way…

Headlines claiming a wolf “lured” an off‑leash dog to its death have alarmed many; any pet loss is heartbreaking. Experts say “luring” likely reflects territorial behaviour when unleashed dogs enter wild areas, and fear‑based language undermines coexistence. #Coexistence

This is what collaboration looks like in action.

A reminder: unsecured food and waste can put wildlife at serious risk. If you find wildlife in distress, call the WildLine: 306-242-7177

Thank you to our friends at @CanineActionProject, and to Meagan and Amy for stepping up when it mattered most.

Because Meagan is also a WRSOS volunteer, they were able to step in immediately. With the right equipment on hand, they safely contained the fox, and Amy, a familiar voice on the WildLine), was able to transport it to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).

Teamwork in action

While out with Canine Action Project in Sturgeon Lake First Nation, Meagan and Amy were flagged down about a fox in distress.

The fox had a bag of cheese stuck on its head — and a broken leg. An unfortunate (and very real) version of the “cheese tax.”

Posts can attract:

Uninformed people who might try to feed or capture wildlife
Unethical photographers
Individuals who could harm them

Life in the wild is already challenging. Let wildlife live their lives undisturbed.

Be a Friend to Wildlife — Keep Their Locations Private

Recently, in Manitoba, orphaned black bear cubs lost their mother after she was shot. Sharing wildlife locations online, even with good intentions, can put animals at risk.

What to do:
✅ Do NOT touch sick or dead wildlife
📞 Call the WRSOS WildLine: 306-242-7177
🐾 Keep pets away

If you develop symptoms after exposure, seek medical advice.

Don’t guess. Don’t touch. Call.

What to watch for:
🕊️ Birds: disorientation, tremors, breathing issues
🦊 Mammals: stumbling, seizures, unusual behaviour

Why it matters:
This virus spreads through contact with sick animals or contaminated fluids — even touching your face after exposure can put you at risk.

⚠️ Please don’t touch wildlife — here’s why.

HPAI (H5N1) is spreading in wild birds across Saskatchewan and has now been found in mammals like foxes and skunks. While the risk to humans is low, it is still possible to become infected through direct contact.

Seeing this new facility come to life strengthens that network. It builds capacity. It builds connection. And most importantly, it builds hope for wildlife across our province.

For us at WRSOS, moments like this serve as powerful reminders that no single organization can accomplish this work alone. Every rescue call, every transport, every successful release is part of a much larger network of people working together behind the scenes.

Our President, Rhiain, Executive Director, Bonnie, and members of our Rescue and Field Station Team walked through rooms that will soon support the recovery of hundreds of wild patients, each one with its own story, each one given a second chance because of the care provided within these walls.
