More I think abt it, this is East Austin's biggest creek challenge: Getting ppl to think creeks here matter as much as Barton's (which is dry as a bone, save the recent rain). Our creeks on the eastside still run, mostly, but they're not as loved or supported. Here's some data on the trash problem:

From what I've been seeing on facebook I think others have been reporting it already but it is something I should probably be more persistent about
Was biking the unimproved parts of Walnut Creek by Old Manor Road and 290 last week and the dumping was probably a bigger mess than the abandoned camp just past 290
We all have days like this
For more than a century, a smelter and other factories spewed 400 million pounds of lead dust across Omaha’s east side. Faced with similar concerns, 13 states passed laws requiring all kids to get a blood test before kindergarten. But not Nebraska.

Me on my 3rd beer: this touchscreen isn't working very good, I might need a new phone...
conservative free speech is when they speak and you listen or suffer the consequences
I say this a lot but it would help a lot of Huskers fans to understand that they are obsessed with a bad football team. One that may get better! But that has been bad for many years. Now that they may be slowly crawling out of the bad tier it has been wild to see some fans driven even more crazy
Kinda what I expected tbh
Would really love to know how the Lincoln Diocese Catholics are processing Trump vs Pope/God but I imagine they'll find something in Aquinas that allows them to rationalize this
US President Donald Trump says the US Navy would immediately start blockading the Strait of Hormuz and would also interdict every vessel in international waters that had paid a toll to Iran. https://aje.news/x545rk
We have entered the “you can’t kill me if I commit suicide” phase of American Decline
Haven't been chased in a while but had a big off-leash dog and its shirtless owner (who was old enough to know better) nearly jump into the bike lane as I was passing the other day. Not my kind of excitement!
I bike around Mueller a lot, and the people who let their dogs run off-leash around Manor Road and Berkman are incredible. One loose squirrel away from a traumatic event
I've always assumed that the dog shoppers and diners are related to people adopting emotionally fragile dogs during lockdown and never figuring out how to leave them in the house by themselves
I'm more curious about the proliferation of people here who refuse to leash their dogs in parks
The reason Share the Road signs suck is because drivers interpret them as meaning that cyclists should defer to drivers.
Not a criticism of any paleontologists, I just feel like the knowledge we create today is less permanent than we hope it would be based on who controls it.
Something I've been thinking about lately with these amazing fossil specimens. Exactly how rare are they? If we lose documentation of them, such as in paywalled Nature journals, will future generations ever be able rediscover similar specimens and understand the pre-historic world in the same way?
At the end of the day I don't think I really care but when I worked at the university and heard a college sophomore refer to their "partner" I really wanted to call a time-out
Always Be Closing
When I saw the headlines my first thought was "Trump wants to nuke". At this point I'm trying not to dissociate but what else can I do besides go about my stupid fuckin day?
Armageddon is terrible, but our only other option was diversity trainings at work.
I have had some version of "he wants all of us to be buried with him" in stuff I've written about Trump in the past and usually but not always taken it out. It didn't like looking at it, mostly, but over time it just became one of those things that was too obvious to bother with. It's all sickening.
Thanks for the rec
it's worth noting that the quote they went out of their way to make look stupid was expressing a reasonable point — a restatement of the long-standing official US policy in fact! — and the quote they clean up and sanitize is expressing a deranged threat of war crimes in an illegal conflict
I don't have any problem with Pine Bluff but I was passing through on a motorcycle trip in college and stopped at a burger shack. The locals were curious and friendly but I could barely understand a word any of them said lol (coming from Nebraska)
The Department of State tweets a video of Secretary Marco Rubio. In the video, Rubio says: "Imagine if instead of spending billions of dollars supporting terrorists or weapons, Iran had spent that money helping the people of Iran. They would have a much different country."
FactPost News tweets a video of Donald Trump speaking at a podium. In the video he says: "We can't take care of daycare. We're a big country. We're fighting wars. It's not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these things."
