I suspect it’s because our minds take the path of least resistance: division is easier than empathy & nuance. Anger gives quick certainty and compassion demands effort. Current politics rewards what is easiest, even if it’s most costly for society. Social media modeled it and individuals adopted it.

Trump took every brake off "AI safety" in favor of maximum investment in the sector and growth. When it sinks in for him the sector is building the thing that takes the jobs from the people he'll turn on that too. Likely unfold in real time on socials. With jobs numbers like these it could be soon.

When I was in law school, the civil rights division at DOJ was viewed as a place where lawyers could maximize their positive impact. It was also one of the most coveted jobs imaginable. This says everything about the people who have worked there and those driving them out.
