There may well be something to that argument, but I don't think that's why most give the incredulous stair. I mean that most people's immediate dismissal of the view is unprincipled and/or unreflective. There is a litany of good reasons to reject the view, but that ain't why hating it is popular.

I think its a meme because to the foolish, it seems like an easy dunk. Most that are dismissive don't understand the motivating problems and are in no position to recognize, let alone evaluate, the tradeoffs. Those who do are rarely dismissive of the view even if they don't accept it.
