Wind and solar power generate ~35% of electricity in the UK.

Wind and solar power generate ~35% of electricity in the UK.

Witty quip... But the UK currently gets 6.6% of it's electricity from solar and growing. Together with wind they are approaching 40% of their electricity generation from those renewable sources alone. πŸ§ͺπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘β˜€οΈπŸ’¨πŸ’§πŸ”‹

For a long time, there was a big push to get more women into STEM.
But there's been less of an effort to push more men into…jobs in health & education”πŸ§ͺ

Solar, wind and battery storage (included in other sources) in the EIA plot are the only parts of the US grids that are increasing in capacity. Nuclear, hydro and fossil gas are flat. Coal is decreasing. As a result fossil fuel generation is dropping (slowly) while renewable generation and storage discharge are increasing.

Challenging yes. But, it's not quite every state and the key word there is "attempting". Still the economics are so favorable for renewables that solar, wind and storage are the only parts of the US grids that are increasing in capacity. And that is translating in to higher generation. πŸ§ͺπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘β˜€οΈπŸ’§πŸ’¨πŸ”‹

That setup saved us ~50% on install. And we still save ~$500/yr on operating costs & have reduced CO2e emissions ~86% since install. Current rates are cutting into savings but that is a function of misguided state and federal policies not heat pump technology. πŸ§ͺπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘β˜€οΈπŸ’¨πŸ’§πŸ”‹

Heat pumps have improved dramatically in recent years. We replaced our 30yr old AC with a three-season heat pump that meets our heating needs to 20Β°F. Our existing gas furnace takes over for temps from <20Β°F down to -15Β°F. πŸ§ͺπŸ”ŒπŸ’‘β˜€οΈπŸ’¨πŸ’§πŸ”‹

In Alaska, where overdose deaths are rising again, Narcan and community are a lifeline Overdoses have been declining nationally since August 2023, but Alaska is far behind in that progress

My favorite article of the series was the one that got the least attention. I travelled to Alaska, where drug fatalities were still climbing, late last summer. I was amazed how many people I spoke with who had recently used Narcan or received it to reverse an OD. Keeping each other alive each day.

How Chicago succeeded in reducing drug overdose deaths The city has adopted a β€˜multifactorial approach to a multifactorial problem’ and has seen a 37% reduction in deaths since the national peak of the crisis

Another of those rare clear nights, so a long look at NGC 4438 in the Virgo Cluster, our nearest rich cluster. Close interactions are quite common in such dense environments, resulting in beautiful car wrecks like this one. πŸ§ͺπŸ”

Can AI models reliably forecast extreme weather events? More-rigorous testing is required before artificial-intelligence approaches are widely adopted by public forecasting agencies.

The authors of a Comment article in Nature highlight concerns over adopting AI in meteorology and call on the weather and climate community to set clear standards, starting with agreed data sets, for testing out-of-sample extreme-event predictions objectively. πŸ§ͺ

But I definitely feel like it's not great that they don't even feel the need to lie about it anymore.

Every time he announces another war crime on social media I think about how 15 years ago there would have been an entire season of TV where they slowly peeled back a massive complex conspiracy meant to hide the fact that we did a war crime, and now he just tweets them out as a FYI

I Wrote Research Funding Announcements for NIH for 22 Years. This Year They’ve Published 14 How NIH went from 756 funding announcements to 14 in two years β€” and what it means for every disease that depends on federal research

An important read by Elizabeth Ginexi.

New #NIH funding opportunities exist to solicit proposals for research that need attention.

75 NOFOs forecasted. 14 released. The rest are in limbo. And not due to scientific reasons. One factor that is killing US research.

Great science story about how "willpower" isn't a real tool kids can use and that less access to stuff that's bad for you (put the phone in another room; don't buy the package of donuts) is a better solution.

And I bet it works for grownups, too. πŸ§ͺ

To investigate the lifelong progression of aging, they continuously tracked behavior from adolescence to death in the naturally short-lived African turquoise killifish. Naturalistic behavioral readout, which is noninvasive, revealed individual animal aging trajectories across life. Behavior not only can be used to infer age but also can forecast future lifespan. The continuous nature of behavioral tracking suggests an architecture of aging whereby individuals progress through adulthood in an orderly sequence of stable and stereotyped behavioral stages.

Frozen rain on tree bark.

What a winter! While we’re seeing some milder days (just around freezing point), there are still amazing patterns made of frozen rainwater on trees.

I’ve heard people say, this winter is proof that global warming is bollocks. 🧡
