I didn't draw this image myself, I found it online many years ago, but I can't remember where, I'm sorry I can't credit the artist. It's the image that comes closest to what I have in mind.
An underground city, with well-constructed buildings just below the surface. Light filters in through a large opening in the distance, much like the mouth of a huge cavern. The lighting, however, is dim, and the entire settlement lies in semi-darkness.

What saddens me most is that in the short period of time he stopped to reflect and say "What I'm doing now doesn't satisfy me like it used to" just before he became suspicious of Kinger's absence, I think that could have been the starting point for him to understand that what he was doing was wrong.
I rewrote the entire first chapter of the book. The previous opening wasn't bad, but I realized I needed a different introduction. 🤔
