While there are parts of seasons 8 and 9 that I really like, the show would've been better off without them.

Right. I think they should've ended it with Season 7. By that point we know what happened to Samantha. If they'd put a bow of some sort on the conspiracy arc in season 7, even with an inexplicable Scully pregnancy, that would've been an ok ending. Their mistake was continuing without Duchovny.

The revival mythology arc could've been good, but they fumbled it SO BAD. The retconning was insane and unnecessary. It just feels like Chris Carter was mad that people didn't think his conspiracy arcs were brilliant, when it was never what a giant swath of his audience ever tuned in for, you know?

Yeah, I can appreciate this sentiment, but some of the other episodes were strong so I'm not that mad. It was just great to see Mulder and Scully back on screen together; I never watched the show for the mythology that was mostly nonsensical anyway. The standalone episodes were always the best.
