You can trade picks, but can never get your actual pick. You could tank to swap with a bottom 2 team, but you’d get their pick the next season and they might be a 40 win team next season. Fans don’t have to root again own team because you could win 50 games and get #1 overall pick w/o trade.
NBA anti-tanking idea- your draft pick is the team’s pick next to you in the standings from the year before. Teams are not allowed to get their own draft pick back in the first round. No more lottery either. Everyone does a swap for the next draft from 1-2 all the way to 29-30 in the standings.
