Recent figures suggest property prices and rents are moderating across the UK.
But does this mean the housing crisis is easing for younger generations?

The Freedom Pass has come under renewed scrutiny in London. Even if the proposed review does not go ahead, it raises a bigger question: should concessionary travel be based on age or need?
Our latest blog explores the case for reform 👇

The “perk” in question is for London where workers aged 60 but below retirement age get to commute to work for free, the cost of which is paid for via higher fares for younger workers. At very least align it with the State Pension Age
Depends where you live. In London the 60+ Oyster card gives free travel to workers BELOW pension age. How is that fair? For a tenner?
Our work centres on the need for a new generational contract. That older gens continue to vote for policies that will bankrupt their kids and grandkids e.g triple lock, will be called out
Question? Do you think workers below state pension age should get free travel across London subsidised by younger workers?
Why is asking for more government resources for younger generations within ageing populations, many of whom have voted in successive governments who ghost the young, & where wealth is conc among older asset-rich cohorts, ageist? Should older age lobby groups stop asking for more for the old?
"On intergenerational fairness grounds, the mayor of London must stop this free travel bung to workers below state pension age.”

Across the #media and #politics, there appears to be an on-going narrative that something is fundamentally wrong in #Britain. Is Britain really “beyond repair”? IF researcher, Tobias Whelton, questions whether this is truly the case for young people:

If you were turning 18 now, would you prefer to go to university or take some other career route?
Go to university: 35% (-6 from 2018)
Take some other career route: 53% (+9)

“There is a powerful argument for intergenerational fairness in a society where inheritance, especially of property, dictates life chances, dividing ever younger cohorts into landowner and tenant classes.” Well said 👏

Angela Rayner is reportedly pushing to abolish the lower minimum wage rate for 18-20 year olds, a move most Britons support
Min. wage should be same for all over 18: 67% (-1 from 2023)
Should be lower for under 21s: 22% (+1)

Spending on Canada's Old Age Security program is unsustainable ($96 Billion+ planned for 2027). Younger generations are suffering disproportionately with unaffordability. The fix for both? Review Canada's outdated tax shelters. www.gensqueeze.ca/protect_oas_... #cdnpoli
My latest, exploring with numbers how the millennial household budget is basically incomprehensible to retired boomers.
Why are basic life aspirations — like owning a home, raising a family, and living on a habitable planet — slipping out of reach for younger Canadians? Generation Squeeze's Hard Truths brings you the untold story about how the deck is stacked against younger people. #cdnpoli #Canada #Millennials

Three stunning and shaming paragraphs, by Rachel Wolf of Public First, in @theobserveruk.bsky.social
We’ve long campaigned for votes@16. Cohort sizes have given older voters more voting power. Widening the voter base, and giving a franchise earlier, both strengthen democratic participation. Now to sort out exclusions in VoterID.

Excellent report by @dmk1793.bsky.social offering a solution to the democratic deficit in the UK, part of which is due to cohort size, ageing and likelihood to #vote.
My new Constitution Society report on compulsory voting has now been published.
I argue that low turnout has left the UK with an unrepresentative electorate. This is creating warped incentives for politicians, and contributing to low growth, high inequality, and rising democratic discontent.

I'm all for trying to ease intergenerational tensions, but the people who are most opposed to reaching net zero by 2050 are literally those who will not be around to face the consequences.
Canadian politicians are sidestepping the most important – and politically dangerous – question in our housing debate: Should home prices rise, stall or fall? Until we answer it, we can’t fix what’s broken in Canada’s housing system. bit.ly/4lzVuW8
