The absurdly cumbersome process of requesting reimbursement for travel using SAP Concur is enough to permanently discourage me from ever traveling for work. How is this the system everyone uses? It’s complete fucking garbage.

We critically appraise attacks on applied behavior analysis (ABA) that it is coercive & suppresses individual identity, aligns with the medical model, causes trauma, & in more extreme cases, constitutes abuse—claims based on unfounded criticism & longstanding myths:

Rumor is grants for special educator teacher & leadership training are about to be canceled. That means fewer special educators during nationwide shortages, fewer people who attract/retain teachers the field, and most importantly, poor outcomes for kids with disabilities and their families. #OSEP
In this new article, we present results from focus groups of 63 single case experimental design experts on questionable research practices. From 2000 participant notes, we found 64 QRPs & corresponding improved practices. 2nd paper (survey of these practices) is under review. doi.org/10.1007/s406...
Regional Education Labs were also canceled yesterday. Absolutely disgusted by this attack on science and education.
Has anyone with an OSEP training or leadership grant received a termination letter? I know people with TQP grants started receiving letters yesterday.
Am I the only one feeling completely defeated by the deliberate destruction of our scientific institutions—what just a few weeks ago was the envy of the world? I don’t think people understand what has happened & what is going to happen following this recklessness. So much suffering on the horizon.

Screenshot of the article that reads: The Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education, appears to be the latest agency in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency office. Dozens of researchers and contractors received notices Feb. 10, directing them to immediately stop work on research projects and program evaluations financed by IES, a federal agency with a roughly $800 million budget, sources say. It was not immediately clear which—or how many—of IES’ hundreds of contracts are affected, though one source estimated roughly 170.
Here's why your education friends had a real rough one today. It's... it's the entire education data collection apparatus of the United States.

Shit is about to get real!
I assume IDEA (e.g., laws/regulations) is protected, but not sure about its funding.
“the bad news is that this show is likely to increase the popularity of several pseudoscientific and potentially dangerous forms of communication: facilitated communication, rapid prompting method, and spelling to communicate.” Stuart Vyse on #TelepathyTapes

I’m in search of survey studies that randomized item presentation to respondents. Need a few good examples that show how response rates should be reported. A book chapter that explains what to report would be even better. Any recommendations are appreciated. #AcademicSky
We hope you save the date to join us in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI)’s upcoming Single Case Conference: Enhancing Replication and Validity. The conference is being held September 25-28, 2025 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Minneapolis Downtown Hotel. You can discover all the city has to offer with the enticing amenities of the Embassy Suites and the city’s delicious dining options and energetic nightlife. I’m excited to be part of the planning committee for this Single Case Research conference. Conference will focus on issues, trends, controversies, & advances in this experimental method. ABA, special ed, psychology, speech-language pathology, & other researchers will undoubtedly enjoy! #AcademicSky
Concur is the worst thing in academia and I will die on this hill.
I saw some fun gifts on Amazon by searching “gifts for statisticians”. A few good coffee mugs and tumblers, t-shirts, etc.
The first article in RiSE is published! Like all RiSE articles, “Getting started with data sharing: Advice for researchers in education” is freely accessible for everyone. riseopenjournal.org/article/id/2...
The UVA announces the launch of Research in Special Education (RiSE), an open-access journal edited by @bryancook.bsky.social Cook and Bill Therrien. RiSE will publish all types of research as well as commentary etcetera with the goal of advancing special education. riseopenjournal.org
My colleague Matt Tincani and our OSEP-funded doctoral scholars Amy Waszerstein and Tess Fruchtman at the #TECBD conference yesterday. We presented on our systematic review of crisis management programs. We found very little (basically no) evidence of the effects of these programs in schools.
I’ve added this to my list of things to read later. ;)
Hi everyone! My colleagues in the College of Education at UT Austin are hiring a Research Professor in The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk with a focus on literacy and/or emergent bilingual students - check out the position here: apply.interfolio.com/159177
BIG Opportunity: Deputy Director of Research
This is a very important, new role at COS that might be perfect for someone that has been leading an academic research lab and is excited about the idea of applying those skills to assess & improve the research culture.

I used to miss Mitch Hedberg. I still do, but I used to, too.
We're now accepting applicants for the March 2025 Evidence Synthesis Institute. More information: z.umn.edu/esinstitute
Single case experimental researchers might find interesting this paper I co-authored w/ Matt Tincani on replication & publication bias pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... #Metascience #AppliedBehaviorAnalysis
Our new studies on questionable & improved single case research practices are forthcoming!
Education-related topic not getting much attention: Will USDOJ be required to halt its investigations of school districts that violate rights of students with disabilities by unjustly restraining and secluding them for challenging behavior. Eight settlements already in place; investigations ongoing.
How will special education be affected by the second Trump administration? Lots of concerns about reducing funding and rolling back civil rights protections--but also plenty of unanswered questions.
My latest for Education Week: www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...
Definitely not an expert in this topic, but tier 1 supports will likely be very helpful; consistent routines, procedures, expectations; dense schedule of reinforcement; active student responding systems; communication with parents (using translation or really simple graphics).
