Beyond embarrassing for everyone involved.
Not sure if we should burn every copy, or keep it around as a monument to what happens when you try to make a movie with your head up your ass.
Before you say anything: believe me when I say that I get the joke. I just don’t think that the filmmakers do.
THE NAPA BOYS - An absolutely excruciating film. What could’ve been a decent 2 minute anti-comedy sketch cannibalizes its central conceit almost immediately. I’d say it’s buried under too many layers of irony, but that would take some amount of brains. This has none. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
MADDIE’S SECRET - Masterful tonal management around an issue that really shouldn’t be this funny. Somehow, Early makes it hilarious, smart, and quite moving. I was very touched by where it all lands. This flick was a huge surprise for me. I really loved this! @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
This surreal mixture of fiction and non-fiction narratives explores this concept, dipping into pure cinema in ways I’ve never seen before.
AGON - At what point does the mitigation of harm within an inherently violent sport cause the sport to lose its appeal? When does it stop being a sport and start being a mere game or activity? @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest
Anywho, this film brilliantly uses its central conceit to speak on the notion of queer repression. Very well done. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest
LEVITICUS - Sometimes you come up with a dumb bit that has no outlet, so you just sit on it for years and years until the opportunity presents itself.
Ahem
IT SWALLOWS.
Thank you!!!!
TUNER - A tried and true formula executed with charm and style. Fantastic lead performance. Also, is that Vince Masuka from Dexter, I see?
Hi, Vince Masuka from Dexter! @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest
Oooh thank you. Please do!
My first set of reviews from @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest: MILE END KICKS and HOKUM! scullyvision.com/2026/04/20/p...
You’re probably wondering how often I won the game.
Welp, I won about as often as anyone else. No significant data.
When I was a child I played Hungry Hungry Hippos so often and with such intensity that I wore a hole in my palm. I’m not joking.
I refuse to play it today at 41 because I’m positive the same thing would happen, and the descent into hole-handed madness would be much quicker.
Need to increase my income. Point me toward some writing jobs/gigs.
THESE ARE MY FRIENDS! - A Philly-based hangout film that very accurately captures a specific time and place — what’s not to love??
Apologies to the one dude, though: Hadestown was lame as Hell. Pun not intended, but I’m happy it occurred. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest
Skill issue, dude. Maybe next time just talk to her.
::snaps stick:: I wish I could write a script even a fraction as good as this one.
OBSESSION - A “be careful what you wish for” story executed in an ingeniously cruel way. Mean-spirited and absolutely diabolical, centered around two of the best horror performances maybe ever. I feel sick. I’m not okay. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
And God bless Apple, who deserves to have all the best sex.
I WANT YOUR SEX - Amazing that someone can make something like this AND something like MYSTERIOUS SKIN. Gregg Araki contains multitudes. The wolves on both of his shoulders are horny AF. God bless Olivia Wilde for going so hard. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
CAROLINA CAROLINE - Nothing you haven’t seen before, but you certainly haven’t seen it with this much heart. Great to see Samara Weaving capitalizing on an opportunity to dig deep. The chemistry between she and Kyle Gallner is off the charts. MAXIMUM SWOON. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social #SpringFest
Somehow it’s a delight! #SpringFest
NINO - If you made this movie in America it would have to be about figuring out a way to pay for cancer treatment. Luckily it was made in France, so it can be about a character’s journey through the days leading up to his first (totally free) chemo session. @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
JANE ELLIOTT AGAINST THE WORLD - What’s small enough to fit in your pocket, but holds enough anti-racist rage to fill nearly a century of life? This thorough doc covers the life of a true character, chronicling not just her successes, but her shortcomings. Respect.

“Next on Exploitation Theater: Blacula, followed by Blackenstein, and The BlunchBlack of Blotre Blame”
HOKUM - successful horror movies can be gnarly, fucked up, twisted, dark, and shocking, but rarely do they give me a true scary feeling. Welp, tonight I got the willies something fierce. Major Stephen King vibes. Damian Mc Carthy’s best yet! #SpringFest @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
MILE END KICKS - it’s wonderful to see a coming of age dramedy where the female protagonist is allowed to be messy, even if seeing 2011 aesthetics mined for nostalgia makes my knees hurt. Barbie Ferreira is a born superstar. #SpringFest @phillyfilmsociety.bsky.social
