MAHA Isn’t About Health. It’s Healthism. RFK Jr. pushes diet and exercise while millions of Americans face hunger, poverty, and worse.

The AHRQ just cancelled all of its grant mechanisms. This is the agency that funds a lot of research on healthcare quality. Congress appropriated them $200+M for this fiscal year. MAHA does NOT care about health. Only healthism. It’s Margaret Thatcher’s fever dream. open.substack.com/pub/adverser...

One of those things you learned about in medical school but didn't think you'd ever hear about again after the Step exams

If there’s no society, there’s no obligation to regulate pollution, guarantee food security or access to healthcare. There are only individuals tasked w/ optimizing themselves. Read why I think #MAHA isn’t about health. It’s healthism. My latest in Adverse Reaction. open.substack.com/pub/adverser...

My latest in @journalgim.bsky.social: Medicaid Coverage Restrictions & On-Label Buprenorphine Rx’ing for Chronic Pain. Current restrictive policies are associated with lower historical uptake of buprenorphine products that are FDA-approved for chronic pain, a safer alternative to traditional opioids

Requiring reviewers to log into some portal to review the manuscript as opposed to providing you with a direct link to the review form can legit add a week to two weeks to my review time I’m so sorry.

I understand that short form videos are what “works” in our new attention economy… how well do mid-length explanatory/criticism videos perform on youtube? I just don’t love the amount of nuance lost in 1-3 min reels/tik tok videos.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

Still not a US citizen so limited in the kids of risks I can take bc self preservation or whatever. People with kids/dependents naturally take fewer risks. Leaves us with generational wealth type young doctors who need to be doing a lot more organizing.

Honestly feeling quite a bit of distress re the undoing of public health etc being facilitated by doctors, while many of our professional societies are, it seems, just doing press releases.

The Zohran press conference is your regular reminder that the entire administration folds like tissue paper at the slightest hint of confidence and conviction, and thus the fact that national democrats are playing a game of capitulation and weakness is exactly why they're all getting away with it

How the FBI Became the Face of Deprofessionalization What research tells us about national security under authoritarianism

New from me:
Kash Patel is engaged in purges, removal of real accountability, and impunity for loyalists at the FBI.
Researchers told me that these are the exact patterns that create abusive national security organizations under authoritarianism. 🧵

Opinion | Trump Aid Cuts Kill More Christians Than Jihadists Do Murderous attacks on Christians and Muslims alike are a real problem in Nigeria. Cutting humanitarian assistance there is even more lethal.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“If Trump cares about Christians or anyone else in Nigeria, all he needs to do is restore aid and let babies live,” our columnist Nicholas Kristof writes.

Buprenorphine is safer than most if not any opioid we prescribe but people still act like dosing it is some esoteric practice. There’s no shortage of resources we can use to figure how to dose a medication for the first time. We should use them when prescribing a new medication.
