Pre-ECHR, rights were almost completely at the whims of the current parliament - which doesn't always represent public majority. The Bill of Rights of 1689 could be very easily abolished by parliamentary majority.
The ECHR created a set of rights that have an external guarantor. That's the point.

The UK electricity is already the most expensive in the world.
Price set to rise again in October as Ofgem's pricing formula lets companies rip people off.
Who protects the people?
Trans people arenât the issue, immigrants arenât the issue. Your life is shit because of billionaires, who brainwash you into hating or blaming scapegoats so you wonât turn on them.
If you buy their bullshit, well done, youâre about as intellectually advanced as a medieval serf.
âGender criticalâ beliefs are worthy of exactly the same respect that society affords ârace criticalâ (aka racist) beliefs: none at all.
If you donât treat your fellow humans equally well irrespective of your personal bigotries, kindly fuck off out of my life.
Sunday Times cover saying new poll shows only 29% would vote for Brexit now.
And expect that number to shrink further.
No matter how much the government, major parties, or tabloid press push âBrexit benefitsâŚâ
People know Brexit doesnât.
Brexit leaves the UK in a structurally weaker position, bleeding money, time, efficiency and opportunity daily.
Only 29% would back Brexit now
Hilarious how all his low IQ pay pigs kick off when I point out that Tommy Robinson is only 5ft 3in tall.
âItâs an immutable characteristic!â they yell, in crayon.
Yeah? Well so is being brown, Gary.
The Courier reports on Sandie Peggie's racist posts, where she used the term "p*kis" and said that, following devistating floods, Pakistan looked like a "giant bowl of coco pops".
Sandie Peggie is supported in her case by Sex Matters.

Starmer/Reeves should prepare UK for wealth tax, say top economists.
Long overdue.
Top 1% have more wealth than 70% of population combined.
Laws bent to help the rich - privatisations, PFI, corporate subsidies, capital gains and dividends taxed at lower rates than wages, unchecked profiteering.
We need to make Labour more scared of losing votes & seats to the Green Party than to Reform.
My interview with the Huffington Post about why I'm asking for your vote to be the next leader of the Green Party.

Debbie Abrahams tells the Prime Minister his welfare bill âwas poor legislation designed to save money for the treasury by cutting support for sick & disabled people, so far removed from Labour values of fairness & social justice, let alone compassion & common decency I felt ashamedâ
Remember all that fulminating in the billionaire press about "free speech" (ie their freedom to abuse Muslims, trans people etc with impunity)? Now that people are being arrested for speaking about an issue of the utmost gravity, the self-appointed guardians of liberty have fallen strangely silent.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy, "Water companies say they're putting billions in"
Feargal Sharkey, "They took ÂŁ84 billion in dividends and created ÂŁ74 billion of debt.. We've been cheated"
"There is no pollution control in this country anyone, the companies are out of control"
Oli Dugmore, "Most fair minded British people would accept the spirit of what Diane Abbott was trying to say"
"If you present as an ethnic minority you experience, visibly, you experience racism differently"

There is Westminster talk of Cabinet splits over Sir Keirââs handling of the issue, but little sign that this will lead to a course change.
One left Labour MP told the Star: âI no longer believe that the Labour Party can recover.â
If youâre not sure who to support, ask yourself who would deliver lifesaving treatment to your Mum at 4am in A and E.
It wouldnât be Wes Streeting.
Support NHS resident doctors.
It is absolutely absurd that Diane Abbott has been suspended for this.
She's describing the lived experience of anti-Black racism.
She wasn't saying Jewish people and Travellers don't experience racism. She's saying that racism takes different forms.
They have got it removed havenât they.
I usually agree with you but here I think the attempt at laying equivalent culpability isnât justified
Itâs quite a steep ask to want a government to breach a serious court imposed restriction. Come on
One must be fair, there was a super injunction already in place
Only a small % of people engage in toxic activity online, but theyâre responsible for a disproportionate share of hostile or misleading content on nearly every platform
Because super-users are so active, they dominate our collective impression of the internet www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...
I really donât know why anyone is taking IEA bilge re wealth taxes seriously.
1) they represent the super wealthy
2) you may as well ask a rabid pitbull if he *wants* a muzzle
3) if u own a UK utility company & u leave because of high taxes, the asset stays, tax that or take it back = lower bills.
MPs have taken over ÂŁ2.3m from private healthcare, exposed by Every Doctor campaign.
Meanwhile at Epsom Hospital, porters & cleaners are told thereâs no money for basic NHS pay.
Let's make sure we've got the basics covered and defend our NHS.
Reform UK's Darren Grimes tells constituents he can't hold surgeries with them because he's been advised by the police not to do so for "security reasons".
The only problem? Police spokesperson says this is entirely untrue and they gave no such advice
