A lovely bike-only bridge on Noordammerweg south of Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

A white arch with cables supports a deck for two-way bike traffic.

The diversion to this lovely bike-only bridge would only take 3min each way.

Dam Square in 1974 and today. It remained a large gyratory system for cars right up until the late 1990s before three sides of it were pedestrianised

My favourite Dutch ride is along the North Sea coast; miles of continuous cycle paths past endless sandy beaches and seaside towns, largely only reachable by foot or bike. The dunes serve as flood defence, but also form one of the world’s great cycling corridors.

Just realised you can spawn Dutch trains on @trainsimworld.com in the UK and vice versa. Just had a nice run from Euston to Milton Keynes and Stockport to Manchester Piccadiily on a Dutch sprinter and Zwolle to Groningen on an Avanti Evero class 805

In 1876 there are cars parked both sides and driving on the tramline. Today the street is trams and pedestrians only, although someone is riding a bike along the street

A city with less motor traffic works better for everyone. Safer cycling, easier access for people with mobility issues, more space for people on foot, quieter neighbourhoods for residents, and thriving local businesses. This is what streets look like when they’re designed for people, not just cars.

Very true

Everyone is turning their back on them. Strengthening their own militaries, investing in independent payment systems, and reducing reliance on US technology and infrastructure. Every western country will look for some greater level of independence from America

Not sure many Americans realise how much Trump has fucked their country. There’s no going back to how things were. The US is no longer a politically stable country, and that changes how the rest of the world has to think. We can't make plans for the future if the Republicans risk undoing everything

Most rail upgrades treat cycling as an afterthought. Harderwijk didn't.

A level crossing replaced by an underpass. Cycling designed in from the start, not bolted on later.

Infrastructure that connects people instead of cutting them off.

Orban owns the media. He controls the information environment. He rigged the electoral system to make defeat next-to impossible. The govt of the most powerful country on earth tried to bribe Hungarian voters in his favour. It didn't work.

A hanging bike path bolted onto a railway bridge above the River IJssel.

The Hattem–Zwolle route runs 5.5km with no traffic lights, barely any crossings, and priority all the way.

This is what it looks like when cycling is built to rival the car - not as an afterthought, but by design.

Split image showing De Beauvoir Town before and after traffic filtering. The top black-and-white photo shows Northchurch Road lined with parked cars. The bottom modern colour photo shows the same street with bollards blocking through traffic; a person stands with a bicycle in the road while a child cycles nearby, with more greenery and a calmer, people-focused street scene.

52 years ago today, 8 April 1974, experimental road closures were introduced in De Beauvoir Town.

They were later made permanent, creating Hackney’s first low traffic neighbourhood: safer streets to travel through, & space for families & children to play
