“Don’t ruin the surprise.” His grip tightened around the contraption on her face, “Our guest will be here any minute.”

Her breath came sharp through her nose as she struggled against the iron biting into her skin. “Shh, shh, shh…” he crooned, tilting her chin as though admiring the cruel craftsmanship of the mask—like a muzzled beast on display.

Her arms were wrenched behind her back with brutal force. A cry tore from her throat, muffled into nothing by the mask as panic clawed its way up her spine.

A deep chuckle vibrated from behind her as slender fingers pressed into her cheek. “Not so dangerous without your magic, fae bitch.”

Something slammed into her from behind.

Cold metal clamped over her mouth and jaw, a fitted mask snapping into place with a vicious click. It burned on contact, a sharp, searing, venomous bite that sank deep into her skin, and her magic died instantly. Snuffed... Gone.

The shadows shifted, crawling along the walls, twisting her focus.
She exhaled slowly and lifted a hand. Fire answered her call—embers sparking to life at her fingertips before blooming into flame in the hearth, light pushing back the dark.

“Kass?” she called, her voice quieter than she intended, edged with something dangerously close to unease. No answer.

The penthouse greeted her in silence—low-lit, all gleaming marble and glass, every piece of it expensive... and utterly lifeless.
It felt wrong. Too still. Too cold. Like a mausoleum dressed in luxury.

Celaena eased the door open, every instinct in her body tightening as she crossed the threshold. She should have called Levi, she knew that, but there hadn’t been time.
Kass wouldn’t stay put long enough for careful plans. This might be their only chance to pull her back.

Quick heads-up: tomorrow’s queue will be a suuuuper short one, serving as a prelude to the end of this arc 🤠
