ScanLag: High-throughput Quantification of Colony Growth and Lag Time Growth dynamics are fundamental characteristics of microorganisms. Quantifying growth precisely is an important goal in microbiology. Growth dynamics are affected both by the doubling time of the microorganism and by any delay in growth upon ...

Maybe "ScanLab" is useful. They scan colonies on plates over time. Looks like they wrote some software to control commercial scanners:

Functional Metagenomic Selections for Phage Defense

Functional Metagenomic Selections for Phage Defense

My lab’s first preprint!

We used functional metagenomics to identify phage defenses in human and soil microbiomes. We scaled these selections while maintaining accuracy, enabling us to examine 9 habitats for defense elements against 7 phages.

High rates of plasmid cotransformation in E. coli overturn the clonality myth and reveal colony development The concept of DNA transfer between bacteria was put forth by Griffith in 1928. During the dawn of molecular cloning of DNA in the 1980s, Hanahan described how the transformation of DNA plasmids into ...

Great! I'm not 100% sure about the salary. It's probably a 12 month appointment, but we're also in a medical school, so things are a bit different. Feel free to ask Kim Reynolds via email!

dallas skyline from UTSW

Beyond our corner of the 11th floor, UTSW is an amazing place to do basic science. There are excellent grad programs, very professional core facilities, and top notch faculty (including practicing MDs)!

We see many different types of science fitting under "systems biology" - the key is work that combines wet lab & dry lab (computation/theory) efforts.

Interests might include genetics, physiology, syn bio, communities, or evolution. We are open minded. If this sounds intriguing, please apply!

Wow - bluesky! 📈 🦠

Please help me amplify a special faculty search. We're looking for someone in "Microbial Systems Biology" to join me and @kreynoldslab.bsky.social at UTSW Sys Bio / Bioinformatics.

There is an empty lab space right next to us waiting for you!

Accidentally flipped the red & black terminals on the power supply and ran the agarose gel backward. DNA went straight from wells into buffer. 😅

A research poster next to dinosaur fossils at a museum.

We just had our dept retreat this week at the Perot Museum. Pretty awesome to have a poster session with the dinosaurs!

Thanks to everyone that helped plan! @kreynoldslab.bsky.social

Come join us at UT Southwestern!

It's a very nice place to do science. There's an extremely strong basic science community and there are interesting opportunities to connect to the clinical side of the institution.

👋 Hello Bluesky! 👋

I'm an independent fellow at UT Southwestern Medical Center and my lab is developing high throughput genetic systems for bacteria using DNA oligos. We're broadly interested in bacterial physiology and genomics.

I will be trying to use this app more moving forward!
