The fact that fines are so miniscule might have something to do with that. Its much cheaper to keep being caught and pay the fines than to do the right thing.

We all recognise smoking kills , that's why tobacco ads were banned in 2002 . Fossil fuels kill too & according to a study in BMJ , cause 5.1 million deaths per year .

Help me ban fossil fuel ads for good– sign my petition to force a Parliamentary debate govpetition.uk/700024

Trees and bushes along rural and main roads reduce visibility and light, affecting road safety (particularly under bad weather). But they are pretty much all widerness we have left.

I'm surprised most people haven't left yet.

I've never seen a linx hunting deer or fox. Their diet is mosty based on rabbits, hares and pigeons. They are gorgeous though.

Problems of the Irish village require immediate action Opinion: We need a reform of prevailing settlement strategy

"...the random spread of housing over hills and away from villages... is sundering the rural support system. When country people move beyond walking distance they are more inclined to leave the village behind and drive into town to do business." www.irishtimes.com/news/social-...

‘I’m used to people thinking I’m lying’: are Scotland’s sea eagles killing hundreds of lambs? Bringing back the long-vanished bird to the UK was hailed as a conservation triumph. Then farmers started finding the corpses of their prized livestock

Hill farmers state sea eagles are killing hundreds of lambs in Scotland. Conservationists acknowledge lamb remains are common in sea eagles nests but large killings are unlikely. Lack of usual prey may also be exacerbating the problem @whittledaway.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The Global North’s fashion addiction is fueling an environmental disaster.

@greenpeace.es tagged 23 "recycled" garments and tracked them to 11 countries. Many end up in landfill.

On #BlackFriday, remember: if you don't need it, don't buy it!

Research needs structural funds not just grants. Otherwise, researchers' precarious conditions will continue to worsen and science will continue to suffer.

Money Diaries: A PhD researcher on a €22K stipend living in Dublin This week, our reader is carefully managing to live on a small stipend while studying in Dublin.

There are far too many home truths in this "How I spend my money" by an intl PhD student living in Dublin. Especially the bit that if they'd known what they know now they wouldn't have come.

This is why I'm nearly PhD-student-less.

We really need system change

That kindness is always going to be appreciated by creators, but if you want to help to boost something here, you have to repost it so others see it. 🙂

‘Even my grandchildren might not see the returns’ – why Ireland has failed to plant enough trees A total of 446 applications have been received by the Department of Agriculture since the Native Tree Area Scheme (NTAS) was set up this year.

We are still failing badly at establishing new forests. And we'll continue to fail until we recognise that the foundation for forest establishment is ecology and not economy.

Apart from planting more, we need to stop/reduce spraying and overgrazing.
