That's my thought too, but it's an easier position to take when I'm not running a live service that needs to keep a playerbase playing for months and years
You might think differently if your game's reputation and continued funding relied on keeping the Steam concurrent player count high
And as the first few raid tiers of Heavensward showed I'm not sure players have much of an appetite for the former in a game like FFXIV; they want the only thing preventing them from clearing to be their skill, not gear
So, strict DPS checks are brought in as the way to make the fights challenging
...and the only ways to prevent modern super-players from achieving this in a single weekend is by either making it a huge grind to get the gear necessary for the challenge, or making it a really really really hard skill check
Everyone is in competition with each other to clear content the fastest to gain the prestige items before anyone else...
...Which means that, if you give classes unique and cool capabilities that actually interact with the raid boss, then some classes might be excluded from parties because they don't have the right abilities for whatever task is at hand
So, unique abilities like that cannot be allowed to exist
Abilities that don't do DPS are either absolutely necessary or completely useless with no inbetween, depending on whether or not they're needed to execute that optimal strategy, whatever it happens to be
The optimal strategy for overcoming any given challenge is instantly mathed out by the playerbase and widely dispersed through the internet
Assuming it's a group challenge, you are then expected to study and perform these strategies so you don't hold others back from getting the loot they want
The reason I think a lot of MMOs evolved towards DPS-centric gameplay and spread-stack-dodge-the-AoE boss design, is that traditional RPG systems (tanks, healing, diverse abilities) are way too easily solved by their playerbases
