what a lot of people dont get about comedy is that humans dont create jokes, we discover them - there are no comedians, only joke scientists

if i tell a joke thats offensive to someone - its not my fault, im just pointing out that the joke exists. the joke was like this when i found it

1. Maruja - Tír na nÓg

Yeah it's Maruja again. This one is a continuous 20 minute free jazz performance of theirs and I am a big fan of it.

2. Mr Beast Death 2030 - Mr Beast Death 2030

This ones super obscure - small connecticut post-hardcore band with a sense of humor.

I'd also class it as mental-breakdown core in the same vane as that Shearling album, but it's way catchier.

3. Jane Remover - ♡

Mostly a collection of singles Jane put out this year that didn't fit on their last album, but they're all so good.

4. The Orchestra (For Now) - Plan 76

I like this EP for the same reason why I liked multiple of the albums on my top 10 so I'll try not to repeat myself, but this is some very high quality art-rock, and I'm excited to see where this band goes next

5. MSPAINT - No Separation

I'm wearing my "I only listened to this because fantano said it was good" hat right now but it is good.

And here's a bonus top 5 EPs of the year list:

- and of course Harry Wilkinson's vocal performances which switch between impassioned rapping, and beautiful falsettos when appropriate.

I am just absolutely obsessed with every single track on this album.

and just say that everything about Maruja's sound is absolutely perfect to me, from Joe Carroll's gorgeous saxophone playing, to Jacob Hayes's punchy and energetic drumming, to Matt Buonaccorsi's thick, powerful bass riffs, -

- works really well.

I'm resisting the urge to not just go track by track talking about every single thing I like about it - not since Radiohead's In Rainbows has there been an album where I'd class more than half the tracks as 11/10s.

So instead I'll try to speak a little more generally -

- and they stuck the landing harder than I ever could've imagined.

'Pain To Power' keeps the snappy, jazzy song writing of their previous work, but turns the energy up to levels I never thought possible. Their more free jazz/jam oriented work also gets incorporated into the mix in a way that -

1. Maruja - Pain To Power

I first discovered Maruja with their 2023 EP 'Knocknarea', which I thought was an incredible addition to the UK 'windmill scene' & jazz-rock canon. But truly, I was anxiously waiting for them to put out their debut album and realize their full potential -

The Armed - THE FUTURE IS HERE AND EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED
Super catchy, super noisy, super punchy. Great post-hardcore

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz
Pushes the boundaries of how hard I can physically handle my music to hit.

Before we get to #1, some honorable mentions

Shearling - Motherfucker, I am Both: "Amen" and "Hallelujah"...
Yeah this album is just fucking insane. Like, clinically

Hannah Frances - Nested In Tangles
My favorite singer-songwriter album this year. Very dense soundscapes which I am always a fan of

2. Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper

This was my most anticipated release of the year, and it did not disappoint!

On some days I'd dub this "pretentious white boy music", but there are few musicians right now that I respect more than Quadeca. Every track is a carefully crafted capsule of magic

3. Ciśnienie - [angry noises]

Polish rock outfit Ciśnienie also arrive to 2025 with what is easily their best work.

It's everything I love about their stuff (& post-rock in general), but louder, darker, and of course, angrier. The crescendo part-way into the opening track is seriously mindblowing

4. Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant

Forget what I said about Hesse Kassel, THIS is the album that filled the pre-Isaac Departure BCNR-shaped hole in my heart this year.

Consistently great, powerful art-rock/post-rock instrumentation mixed with just the right amount of sentimentalism.

5. Ethel Cain - Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You

This is the only album on this list that I can't go back to because it will probably make me cry again

Ethel takes things in a slower, more somber direction on this album, and it makes for some of the rawest story telling I've heard this year

6. Swans - Birthing

Swans arrive with one of their strangest projects yet.

From the suspenseful crescendo on the title track that sounds like being stabbed to death, to the ear-splittingly beautiful closer 'Rope', Swans demands that you give your full attention to every minute of this 2 hour epic

7. Backxwash - Only Dust Remains

Easily my favorite Backxwash album to date. Every song on this thing goes HARD AS FUCK. Nonstop aggression and passion, paired with instrumentals that are in-your-face enough to match

8. Hesse Kassel - La Brea

Dubbed by many as the "Chilean Black Country, New Road", Hesse Kassel approach this 80 minute long album with the heaviness that I expect from post-rock, while still making room for lighter, breathtakingly beautiful moments
