From October to January I had literally no phone signal or mobile data and aside from one or 2 annoying things like 2 factor authentication with banks I had no downsides. Reckon I'll just cancel my contract when it runs out

I've genuinely been considering getting rid of my phone based on how enshittified everything has become

A great night out at the Capital Theatres Studio seeing The Land That Never Was. Really entertaining work from a gifted storyteller, @liamrees.bsky.social has the goods and yes folks he has delivered. Also appreciate having a Q&A with an academic host, always nice to see the other side.

Next week we're welcoming the brilliant @liamrees.bsky.social with The Land That Never Was.

This true story of Scotland’s most infamous con artist Gregor MacGregor asks audiences what they believe and why.

Part confessional storytelling, part TED Talk but mostly bullshit, The Land That Never Was tells the true story of Gregor MacGregor, a Scottish conman who sold a country that literally did not exist.

Today's revelation: make your play's central an unreliable narrator so that any plots holes are actually a thematic choice rather than a glaring mistake.

In totally unrelated news you should get tickets for The Land That Never Was! @trontheatre.bsky.social @sceneandheard.bsky.social

A newspaper article with the headline: Conman who invented a country. With a photo of a tropical beach.

An extract from the newspaper article saying:

Rees says he was struck by the sheer audacity of the fraud "The ability to say, I'm going to make up a country' was just extraordinary. And the fact that happened over 200 years ago helped me make sense of what we're living through now. It's easy for us to say 'Oh, we live in unprecedented times of post-truth' but, you know, there's always been charlatans."
There are parallels, he believes, between MacGregor and the crypto scams of today, or Elizabeth Holmes, and her fraudulent blood testing company Theranos. "Even looking at the way Trump and Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage invoke an idea of the past that doesn't really exist," he said. "They're all manipulating and scamming people in different ways."

The Land That Never Was is at The Studio, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh on March 14 and at Tron Theatre, Glasgow, on March 21-22.

Every time I see an org say they got less than they ask for I wonder how much of a shortfall they're dealing with. Mostly because I've run an org and know the strains but without more transparency everyone ends up fighting one another

The Fringe Soc reminds me of my cat, who has apparently never been fed in her life and is surely going to waste away unless I refill her half-eaten bowl of food

Can you tell us what those "good ideas" are? Just one?

They're a centralised ticketing service, provide a contact list of accredited media at the Fringe, and run some events during the Fringe. That's kinda it

There seems to be a lot of new (smaller) orgs getting multi year funding which is nice but we don't know who all applied so can't see what's been cut. Big one I noticed is the Trav got cut. It's mostly headlines but not as much known about if orgs are getting more, less or standstill funding
