I find approach to conflict useful to consider when creating characters. It primes you to imagine conflict-rich situations and helps bring out the essence of a charater.

When initial approach fails, she… changes tactics, escalates, gives up, strategizes, asks help, turns to underhanded tactics, etc.

This can change as a result of the character arc, or when circumstances prove unsolvable by the character’s usual method and force them to examine their own world view.
