I still fondly recall thumbing through his books before resuming my seat at the drawing table to render more characters and scenes from the D&D multiverse.π¨

His influence can best be seen in my early work, especially for the Planescape roleplaying game.
Left: "Armanite" from the AD&D Planescape boxed set Planes of Chaos, 1994.
Right: "Antique tramway", Heinrich Kley, 1909. The acting and movement here is top notch.
I was enthralled by his masterful sketches of mythic beings, anthropomorphic animals and turn-of-the-century tech depicted with a wicked sense of humor.
Left: "Mephit Imp" from the AD&D Planescape Monstrous Compendium, 1994.
Right: "What a Stench!", Heinrich Kley, 1909. His devils are the best!
The German illustrator, Heinrich Kley, had a birthday yesterday!
I first discovered his loose, yet frenetic, drawings in a 2-volume collection back when I was in art school.

...here's a few more!
I've been busy painting on Magic the Gathering artist proofs for the upcoming Magic Con in Las Vegas. These are rendered at a level of finish I've never offered before and are painted in the same medium (acryla gouache) that the original illustrations were done. More details and images to come!π¨
I did revisit her design in 2010 for BLACK GATE magazine, though, I admit this version lacks the sinister edge of the original (I was deep in illustrating WONDLA when I drew this)...
I own all the preliminary sketches from FACTOL'S MANIFESTO and Nilesia was sketched 3 times, which is unusual for back then (the deadlines were so tight, I usually went with the 1st or 2nd sketch). My guess is she was a "dangerous things come in small packages" idea, though I don't fully recall.βοΈ
Wow! Nice rendition. Although I do recall this piece, I no longer own the original, which was rendered in colored FW inks, mostly blue and sepia with umber. Her hair is likely just a mix of those three colors.
Can you guess it? π€

More painted artist proofs for Magic Con, Vegas!β¨
My studio is practically a vintage toy store. These new LABYRINTH action figs from Plastic Meatball sure fit right in!β¨
I am beyond excited to announce I will be a Guest of Honor at this year's @dragoncon.org ! Ang and I will be there to sign books, cards and other gaming materials as well give presentations and demos. We're planning on producing lots of fun collectibles too! We'll see you in September ATL! π¨πβοΈ
The foil "Crop Rotation" is a promo card included in the manga, "Destroy All Humans, vol. 6" and the Brainstorm is from the latest Secret Lair, DandΓ’n Deck.π
New artist proofs received in time for Magic Con, Vegas!β¨
Thanks Steve!
Iβve been busy painting away on Magic the Gathering artist proofs in preparation for Magic Con, Vegas. More to come throughout the weekβ¦
Each year, the @jrlibraryguild.bsky.social chooses yet-to-be-published titles, curating a list of award-worthy and award-winning books that they feel are essential to libraries. Ang and I couldn't be more thrilled and honored to have this golden seal upon Scary's cover!π₯ππ
Wow! I am doubly excited to learn that both THE WUMP and A VERY SCARY BOOK have been named a @jrlibraryguild.bsky.social Gold Standard Selection!
Iβm switching from art markers to my acryla gouache paints for a collection of Magic the Gathering painted proofs. This is the same medium I painted the card art in. All will be available at Magic Con, Vegas.π¨
I love the drawings from the source book. They even released a little portfolio way-back-when.
Aw man, this made my day!
Aw thanks!β¨
Yes. They were too difficult and time consuming to paint...
Thank you! (But I did not draw that modron).
You're onto me! π
Aw thanks! That's one you don't hear about much! #DeepCut
