Alcestis as a Throat Become a Well Who speaks for me when I cannot will I be gently soothed until the chilly hands drop their fluttering at the breast the head once more conjoined to body and air restored to lung and who will dispel what choked me to wherever such things go the stony vault for all ejected reliquiae

they ask me what has happened and I cannot say that between my brain and belly now there is a well sunk by the man I followed to the riverbed who made me kneel before his slick and stony vault until my throat was sore and my hands were limp from grappling and my husband cannot fathom my stillness now or my refusal

to explain that the woman split in half and fused again is satisfied with what her brain and belly say to one another that the well its passage cleared swallows all its water
