I think we understand the steps to this dance:
1️⃣Damaging article against Trump or ally
2️⃣Subject claims defamation
3️⃣Sues immediately
4️⃣A month later, media entity files motion to dismiss
5️⃣Months after that, it's granted. Case dismissed.
6️⃣Appeal. Takes a year.
7️⃣By the time appeal fails, world moves on.

US elites decided, like a school of fish, that climate concern is old, boring, "woke," square, not hip & popular any more. As usual, it was based almost entirely on internal elite dynamics. It had nothing to do with the actual public, which is more concerned than ever.
American exceptionalism on EVs:
A map of Washington snowpack, showing many of the state's river basins below 50% of normal.
In case you were wondering, the snowstorms last week did NOT end the drought. Snowpack is a key water supply source in WA and unfortunately, only a few days last week were cool enough for any new snowpack. This was nowhere near enough to make up for the snow we didn’t get over the warm winter.
“It wasn’t that long ago that there weren’t any protected bike lanes downtown. The bike network is better than it’s ever been in Seattle,” he said. “If people haven’t ridden downtown recently, I encourage everyone to try it again.”
Great to chat with @nickdeshais.bsky.social about this connection!
Really good headline
It feels like yesterday that online-engineers-of-a-certain-age were saying that heavy freight could never be electrified. To quote William Gibson, "The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet." Fossil fuel interests want to keep it that way.

The #1 worst spring drought, so far, on record in US history! That’s where we find ourselves today. 100% of the Southeast is in #drought, 70% of the US, and 3/4 of #Florida in “extreme” drought. Lack or rain and the #1 warmest US year on record to date is how we got here…
Anger over the data center boom has spilled into politics with voters unseating local politicians who support them. It's become an issue hard to ignore in the midterm elections. n.pr/3QfF8I1
Someday, with luck and hard work, she will have a name too.
We all know Trump lies about everything ceaselessly and with impunity, but this is especially galling since it's been so obviously false for decades and because it's so dangerous to the entire planet.

Unprecedented corruption
Large BEV commercial trucks are now outselling diesel commercial trucks in China for the first time. While the world electrifies, the US is squandering resources to fight over expensive, dwindling, polluting, fossil fuels. 🧪💡🔌 ☀️💨💧🔋 www.electrive.com/2026/01/23/y...
The ongoing efforts to weaponize the DOJ against Trump's enemies poses a profound danger to democracy and the rule of law
Mount Shasta looms over the iron gateway to Weed, California.
Another EV road trip on the books: 1,750 mi round trip from Seattle to Santa Cruz.
Noticeably more fast chargers out there since last time we did this trip a few years ago - we never had to wait for one to open up, which wasn’t the case several years ago.
Prize for most scenic charger: Weed, CA.
Proud of my graduate student, Kaiwei Luo, because today his first research chapter of his PhD was published in Nature. Drought triggers and sustains overnight fires in North America. nature.com/articles/s41...
Another indication of our climate-changed future.

Is mandating an increase in the amount of corn and soy we burn in vehicles good for food security? No. Is it good for nature? No. But is it at least good for the climate? Also no. Read the latest from @mikegrunwald.bsky.social 👇🏻
Microsoft is the anchor of the carbon removal market. It bought 45 million tons of carbon removal last year; the next largest buyer has purchased 1.8 million tons *ever.*
So what happens now that Microsoft’s paused buying?
Spent the week talking to folks about it: heatmap.news/carbon-remov...
At first I thought this protester was opposed to fracking in Alabama, or maybe by ex-Sen. Franken.
(It's actually "No to the fracking" in Spanish)
Seattle’s goal is zero traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Right now, the numbers are far from zero — and going nowhere but up.
Some Type 2 fun this week as @kuow.org’s Megan Farmer and I bounced across Rosario Strait in a small boat (during a Small Craft Advisory 😬) to report on an endangered species in the San Juan Islands. Happy to report that nobody puked! Yeehaw! 🤠
This is great news, but it nicely illustrates that, just like for science, nothing can replace government funding.
NPR got a one-time gift totaling $113 million, which is not nothing. But Congress clawed back $500 million in annual funding from public broadcasters.
There aren’t enough characters to say this but the criminal conviction underscores the importance of journalism, as the case began with an investigative story in Le Monde. If we want a just and livable world for all, we have to support journalism financially.
I've been reporting a multi-part @onthemedia.bsky.social series about FEMA for like 9 months. I interviewed Cam Hamilton last year after he was fired. I did not see this coming!!!

Of course conversations about diets and food consumption are always sensitive, but I bet most people aren’t aware that US per capita beef consumption peaked in the 1970s and is now 1/3 below what it was then. Chicken is the #1 consumed meat in the US diet since around 1990.
