seeing someone randomly post a track from Metaphorical Music on a forum in 2005 was a real before/after moment for me

jazz and hip hop have obviously always been in conversation with each other but I personally hear a throughline from Nujabes through Flying Lotus and (obv) to Thundercat and all the records he's touched in the past ten years

feels kind of insane to say Nujabes is under-recognized but I honestly don't know if people who weren't around in the 00's know him. aside from being THE forefather lo-fi anime beat stuff he's also imo one of the major shapers of the current interactions between hip hop and contemporary jazz
