There were others looking to run for Senate, like the owner of Maine Brewing Company, but they allowed Schumer and the SDCC to clear the field for an 80-year old, first-time Senate candidate.
This race could have been more competitive if others decided not to jump ship for Mills
everyone can spend their time getting mad at Platner or Platner voters but imo the story is conventional Dems being a) too old and b) unwilling to project the willingness to fight
what that did was create a vacuum and Platner walked right up and said “don’t mind if I do” because Dems didn’t respond
