Det låter rätt rimligt, med reservation för att vi är mitt i utvecklingen. Framför allt måste man ju inte betrakta krig som en kalkyl som slutar på antingen plus eller minus. Iran har både gjort framsteg och lidit bakslag, och det är inte alltid så att de tar ut varandra. Samma sak för USA, förstås.

Weird that having a set of negotiations in which there are no proper diplomats leads to a situation in which no one has a clue what's actually been agreed.

Now, I have a hard time imagining Trump would throw away his Iran deal to support Israeli ambitions in Lebanon. I have an easier time imagining that he had not really thought this through and that he may change his mind once he realizes what’s at stake. That’s probably Iran’s calculus, too.

Sure, I agree. As it happens, Iran is apparently already saying it will fire on Israel and may keep Hormuz closed unless it gets a ceasefire in Lebanon, too. I think they genuinely are willing to risk much to save Hezbollah, but more fundamentally they probably think they’ve got Trump cornered.

Up to Trump, then. I suspect he’ll soon issue a Truth Social fatwa mandating a ceasefire along current lines—i.e., without guarantees of Israeli retreat. It’s both the easiest option and useful in his Iran talks.
