How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

This is also how it's written in Chinese, and no, 橋/桥 doesn't sound like 'bridge' in Chinese either!

Title: Just in time for Mother's Day: Classic literature with added Mums

Panel 1: Moby Dick
"Ahab! Moby! Enough of this nonsense. Apologise to each other and if you can't get along, stay apart." says Ahab's mother, standing in a little boat and looking sternly into Moby's eye, while her son sits chastened behing her.

Panel 2: Casino Royale.
"Vodka martini, shaken not stirred... And a sweet sherry for my mother."
says James Bond. His mother calls over feom their table "Just a little one."

Panel 3: The Lord of the Rings.
"You can look for your ring after you tidy your room and walk the dog, Sauron."
says Sauron's mother, holding out the dog lead to her son, who replies "Aw, mum!".

A cartoon reminder that it’s probably Mother’s Day tomorrow unless you are in the UK.

Bullet Train Explosion: This was quite a decent go at this sort of movie, with interpersonal and rescue-related hijinks and explosions. I enjoyed my time with it.

Shiroi Kyoto (2003) was soooo good. I loved the way they developed the story and characters. They also managed to end nearly every episode on a cliffhanger of some kind 😱

long stretch of worked roman stone on Hadrian's Wall.

long stretch of worked roman stone on Hadrian's Wall.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

Thanks for sharing the vid! Loved the car singing scenes, and it was nice to see the gang again in this version

Wakamonotachi: When I saw the rest of the cast list, I was like, this is an auto-pick.

It didn't disappoint.

It went into heavy topics but the liveliness of the family and some comedic situations leavened it. Excellent character work as well.

Orange Days: Loved it. Brilliant writing and likeable cast.

Went on a hunt for other shows with Tsumabuki Satoshi, and...

Yamato Nadeshiko: Rather bemused slash frustrated by this. FL wasn't written to be very likeable (and in some ways this applied to ML too?) and I never ended up rooting for the leads to get together. Cast somewhat carried it, which led me to finish the show, but overall it kind of fell flat for me.

Kujaku no Dance: Windup was good, payoff was mixed. I felt some of the character beats landed well but the mystery's resolution was so-so.

A bit of writer's block recently so I slowed down on posting over the last month.

I also spent some time on playing Trails in the Sky FC and am enjoying it (heard it's slow; taking it slow; 50 hours for half the game so far).

OK, some mini-reviews: 🧵

Really enjoying this classic Sesame Street segment, two minutes of freestyle jazz riffing on saxophone factory footage

It's signposted in various places online that this drama features an affair. However, that turned out to be one of the subplots rather than the main story, and was handled relatively well, I think.

Overall it's a recommend unless cheating stories are a hard no.

The newsroom is very lively, with a great cast of colorful characters.

The editor, (played by Sasaki Kuranosuke) and Kurokawa (Kate's boss) stand out amongst the supporting cast.

There's whitewashing of what tabloid press do, but also exploration of the impacts some of these reports can have.

Shiranakute Ii Koto (2020):

Was interested in this drama because of Hikaru Kimi e.

It shines in its portrayal of reporters working for a weekly magazine (shukan), hunting down scoops etc.

Yoshitaka Yuriko plays an intrepid journalist and Emoto Tasuku a cameraman who happens to be her ex.

Wait, I forgot. Managed to squeeze in Ichikei no Karasu (2021) and a rewatch of Nodame Cantabile (2006) as well (!!)

Both shows were a good time.

I'm kind of interested in watching Hero (the 2000 one) now.

I enjoyed it overall.

The foreshadowing and parallels were awesome, as were some of the characters (writing and acting).

But I found some aspects of the writing rather unbelievable too. And I had to google the ending. My interpretation was the "right" one but I felt there were too few clues...
