40% of US rail freight is also fossil fuels, mostly coal. Wind coal down and you free up a lot of rail resources! Some of which could be converted to fast electric passenger trains, which in countries with modern transport infrastructure are faster than air travel for most trips under 1000 miles.

"And it is not only covid-19 vaccination that appears to give protection against further cardiovascular complications in people with CVD. One large study found that both covid and flu vaccinations have a protective effect in people with CVD, post-covid and with long covid."
Vaccines work.
MB Hydro planning to build extra generation power using LNG is going to cost us more and tie our energy costs to global markets.
Let's not.
The situation in the US is giving us some clear warning flags on the risks of highly polarized majoritarian systems. It can happen here too.

It's about a lot more than just #EVmandates. The deeper question is how long we'll squander public resources on a sunset fossil fuel industry? The world moves on from ICE vehicles while American car makers cling desperately to the waning days of oil & gas.

We're LITERALLY running out of water and our Minister of AI in Canada is talking about putting up massive AI Data Centres??
We sure hope @evansolomon.bsky.social – who has promised "data centres are coming" – realizes they GUZZLE water >> thenarwhal.ca/ai-data-cent... @thenarwhal.ca

This is unprecedented. MB has never had 3 healthcare facilities grey-listed at the same time
Kinew govt seems incapable of responding
This is the product of chronic & continued underfunding & its only going to get worse while Kinew attempts to balance the budget#mbpoli
Europe just crossed a real line: BEVs outsold petrol cars for the first time Dec 25. This isn’t policy or targets — it’s market reality. Electrification crossed the line. #Bettrification is now doing the damage. At this rate, the EU ICE ban becomes irrelevant — 100% hits well before 2035, with ease.
Big moment for Europe: in December, fully electric cars outsold petrol-only cars in the EU for the first time.
This shows that clear, consistent policy works. Which is exactly why backtracking now would be a mistake. Rolling back targets or creating uncertainty would slow investment and innovation.

Canada’s economic future rests upon developing clean tech in harsh environments and exporting that to the rest of the world. But instead, our feckless leaders are protecting and promoting a dying fossil fuel industry and burning the planet for the sake of short term profit. SMH. #EnergyTransition 🛢️☄️
This is a really good examination of how science, proper science, works. The Guardian article was interesting but shouldn't be interpreted as, "Oh, that's okay then"
I read with interest about Wab Kinew’s AI Ojibwa translator (Forging a Future with AI, Free Press, Dec 22, 2025). This is a great example of how AI tools can be used in positive ways, alongside other helpful uses such as in cancer care, immunology, agriculture, and in finding creative ways to deal with the climate emergency. I also appreciate the importance of building at-home AI solutions to protect Canada’s sovereignty and to keep our personal data out of the hands of American oligarchs. However, I think it is important to point out the contrast between this project and the proposed plans for an AI Data Centre in Île des Chênes. That plan, which is to be funded by American equity firm Blue Owl, includes using six gas-fired turbines to generate electricity and most likely will require massive amounts of ground water for cooling. It seems to me that increasing our emissions and putting our water resources at risk at a time when we stand on the precipice of unprecedented environmental dangers shouldn’t even be on the table. As the Policy Chair for the Green Party of Manitoba, I encourage all of us, and, in particular, Mr Kinew, to think carefully about how, why, and at what cost each and every AI project is built. They are not all created equal. Blair Mahaffy West Hawk Lake
A letter to the editor today from GPM Policy Chair regarding AI development in Manitoba.
With the talk of a gas fired AI data centre in île-des-Chênes, we need to stop and ask ourselves if sacrifing the well being of future generations to keep stockholder value high for huge corporations is worth it.
We need to stop burning stuff.

As if AI isn't disruptive enough on jobs. Hungry for power, finding new ways to use planet-disrupting fossil fuels. Sucking up clean water from our aquifers. The AI boom will likely lead to a dot-com-like crash.
How about we don't stake our future on short term profit?

Clean, super-cheap, ag-friendly, oiligarch-free, low resource energy is really exciting.
Hey, MB Hydro! Read this before building your $3B LNG burning backup plant.

The MB government’s decision to support a new fossil gas-fired power plant—announced in today’s throne speech—is a major disappointment that undercuts its recent commitments to emissions reductions, affordability and economic development. Read our full response: climateactionmb.ca/new-provinci...
Manitoba is an extremely sunny and windy province. Our new special report shows how we can foster renewable energy to move away from fossil fuels: climateactionmb.ca/the-immense-...
Connecting some dots here...
- 80+ countries call for a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels.
- Many of which are building (Chinese-made) solar capacity.
- Which is rapidly dropping in price and improving in efficiency.
- Rendering our expensive oil a financial loser.

Watching Carney's APEC CEO Summit talking about how Canada would vastly increase (more than doubling) our LNG exports by 2040 was distressing.
The costs of fossil fuel damage to climate and health are increasing. Ignoring that is bad economics.

Power (and water) for people, not billionaire oligarchs.
Sometimes it takes a chance encounter to make you remember why you fight so hard for this idea called Canada.
Six brave young teens from Afghanistan reminded me of the need to fight the hate that is oozing over the border.
Here is my latest.

We are likely facing growing mental health problems due to property loss, evacuations, rising food costs, and general existential crises too. Saying we can't afford to clean up our act is indefensible.

Will our political leaders wake up? For the health of our democracy we need Proportional Representation implemented. Premier David Eby has the power to change our voting system, without a referendum. Lets do it!!!
