The same cassowary dad sculpture as the original post but now complete with a shiny layer of varnish.
The cassowary chick on its own in the palm of my hand, about the size of or an olive.
Different angle of cassowary dad.
Cassowary dad now glazed and glamorous.

yea i think they are fundamentally *enabled* by their approach, as opposed to being unnecessarily restricted by it
but i do think it Embeds Big QUirks !!

one thing i learned from corgispace is that when you are semi strict about adopting constraints like these, even when they seem arbitrary, they can end up strongly informing the design, suggesting cool or funny things, etc etc
its not totally clear to me how quirky lock on does that tbf tho lol

yea i think they have some super strong internal ethos *and* practices that involve reusability across games, assets, disciplines etc etc
i think they also have some sense of like... where do they want to spend their time... what features are good enough that they can spend extra on level design...

We're not gonna tell you anything about the games in this bundle. These are experiences best entered knowing as little as possible.

its really special !! the simplicity of the ruleset combined with the DEEP humor encoded in said simple rules is really exceptional in both meanings of the word !!

e.g. maybe a pillar can be used independently as a pillar, OR it can be used to cap a wall segment- as a pillar, you would want the camera + aiming to treat it as porous, but as an endcap you would want it to be treated as opaque...
this isnt the SOURCE of the lock-on problem but it does exacerbate

the other (more obvious) thing about fromsoft engineering is it is deeply profoundly oriented around kitbash, recycling, remixing - i.e. modularity, and the somewhat more ornate environments / combat spaces in soulsy games esp i THINK have some markup complexity that comes in with that

yea its an inconsistent scenario right - you're allowed to use it like a sonar / radar utility in those areas, however enemies can go entirely off radar if they're too close to some stairs lol

short range weapons can be more likely to prefer an enemy behind you if its quite close to you
long range can weight CAMERA DIRECTION more, short range can weight PLAYER DIRECTION more, etc etc

*ignoring ambushes* your prescription is fundamentally correct, its not that hard to weight by distance, enemy state, and screen center and it helps a ton
the best trick most games DONT do imo is also weighting by player equipment - longer range weapons can have a narrower cone of preference

there's still space for gains, and they definitely make slapstick-informed choices / compromises that i both respect and am frustrated by still lol
BUT i think ambushes are far and away the hardest game state thing from a "divine player intent and preserve gameplay" POV

"skeleton pops out around corner" is probably the hardest single problem they have to deal with and its PURELY a design problem, not a technical problem
do you let lock on scan the skeleton early?
do you let lock on pick up on an enemy that has aggro'd you?
how do you KNOW the player has spotted?
