A conure in her cage, which has a label that says "silly goose." She is clinging on to the cage sideways and seemingly looking down at the label. Her vibrant red belly and yellow body are prominent.

A conure in her cage, which has the "silly goose" label on it. She is upright and giving a look that suggests she is offended by the entirely accurate label.

I bought a label maker (for work purposes). This is the first label I made. Pippin is living up to it. She chirpped happily when I applied it.

So I lost my voice this weekend (it's recovering, I just did too much singing when I hadn't quite recovered from a cold) and the thing is I'm a linguist so the whole time I was just thinking oooh this is so communicatively interesting

A few thoughts:

Haha well I'm glad you thought of me for it! I know where some of these books are—U of A has some now because I asked for them—but I need more. Lots of leads now though because of the SHARP list!

I don't always interact with every post, but I do check your profile now and then when I haven't seen you on my feed for a while to see if there's an update. Always wishing you well, and I hope the bite wound heals quickly for you.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have so much going on at once. Thank you for sharing, though. I agree that it's good to have a space where you can share the good and the bad, and I'm glad that you find comfort in your BlueSky friends appreciating your updates.

This is your accessibility testing reminder, buttons need accessible text!

I don't care if it is actual button text, alt text, aria, or hell even sr-only. I just need to know what your button will do BEFORE I press it.

If you'll be at CSDH or DHSI in Montréal this June, please let me know! I'd love to meet some BlueSky friends at academic summer camp.

Very happy that my abstract for the Canadian Society for DH conference in Montréal was accepted! My presentation Digitizing Materiality: Affordances and Limitations of DH for Tactile Books will discuss two works-in-progress: OCR for braille and 3D scanning/printing for preservation of tactile books.

Shout out to @sharpweb.org and the SHARP email list. I sent out a question a couple hours ago, and I have already received several useful responses. The #BookHistory community is always awesome, and I'm so grateful.

The Canada geese are back on campus
From: Health, Safety and Environment

It’s that time of year … nesting season. Here are tips to minimize conflict with our favourite fowl:
Geese are protected under federal law, so nests eggs and birds must not be disturbed.
Give geese plenty of space when travelling by, especially around nests. Proceed calmly — don’t speed by.
Geese typically provide warning signs before becoming aggressive. If a goose hisses, lowers its head or spreads its wings, slowly back away. Don’t turn your back: make eye contact instead.
Never feed the geese
Geese are wild animals and deserve to be treated with respect. It’s best to leave them be.

There is a pair of Canada geese who live on the U of A campus. Yesterday, I saw one goose attempt to attack someone—they got away, don't worry. Today, this is in the campus-wide email newsletter. Respect the geese! They own the campus, we just borrow it.

Very helpful, thank you! I definitely have the notes of where everything has come from. Good tips re: labels. Not sure how I'm handling those yet!

Yea I'm a little worried about the number of objects. I already have to narrow it down so much from what I have! I'm trying to be realistic though. Thanks for this!

If you have planned an exhibit—particularly in your university library or similar—what advice would you give to someone who is at the beginning stages of logistics? What do you wish you had known at the beginning or wish you had done differently?

I am exhausted by the ableism I experience just for existing in public. Young people can need mobility aids. Invisible disabilities exist. Nobody owes you private medical information. Be kind. Don't yell at strangers.

Fighting talk. (And, with my teaching head on, also a useful reminder that different people who engage with books in different roles and for different purposes have different needs.)

Why do we even bother with endnotes--this is my personal pet peeve as a historian, I need to read the spicy, sassy, whiny footnotes immediately

I'm seeing people defending this decision by saying things like "this is eliminating prison LIBRARIANS, not LIBRARIES" so let's take a closer look at that. 1/

I think about this a lot — I often ask my students “what would you try if it was ok for it not to work out? If failure was also an acceptable outcome of the project?”

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your post here, but is your advice to call/email the hiring manager to let them know that you're interested and applying so they specifically look for your application? So apply through the app portal as normal, but also email to introduce yourself?

If you’re teaching DH right now, how are you thinking about your students’ relationship to generative AI? Are you ignoring it? Banning it? Discussing a policy with them first? Encouraging vibe coding?
