Sometimes you can only target the planned object at a time where it literally exists: I am building a house. It {?is/will be} the best house on my street; but sometimes you can reference the "planned object" as if it already exists: I am writing a paper about presuppositions. It's a bit complicated.

Yes, and there is something more general about planned creation and past destruction here: There is no bathroom in this house. It was demolished years ago. / It hasn't been built yet. Elin McCready has some related work: www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cls/...
At last week's XPRAG FEST 2025, I had a great time presenting joint work with Conglei Xu and @judithtonhauser.bsky.social about experimentally comparing diagnostics of at-issueness. Many thanks to Nicole Gotzner's SPA lab lisahofmann.org?project=what...
At last week's workshop on (a)symmetries in presupposition projection, I presented my new dynamic approach to presupposition projection from counterfactual local contexts. Thank you to Alex Kalomoiros, Jacopo Romoli and @zasberlin.bsky.social for an inspiring workshop lisahofmann.org?project=all-...
thank you :)
thank you!! I heard about you shoutout at SALT :)
My article about anaphoric accessibility in hypothetical and counterfactual discourse has been officially published in #Semantics & #Pragmatics ✨ doi.org/10.3765/sp.1... ✨
I uploaded a handbook article about the semantics of anaphora on lingbuzz, focusing on anaphora in hypothetical and counterfactual discourse, comparing dynamic accounts, and making connections to psycholinguistics ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/009... #linguistics #semantics #pragmatics #discourse
it's true, especially about deeply internalized social mechanisms.. so that's is a really good explicit first goal to have ✨
I love that the first tip is "stop lying" like let's just be honest here 😇
Constraints on anaphora are derived based on discourse consistency and a pronominal existential inference interpreted relative to possible worlds in the local context.
Building on analyses of modal subordination, the paper introduces a flat-update dynamic semantics, where expressions with the potential to introduce a discourse referent do so globally, regardless of their embedding context.
Those data have previously received disparate analyses and raise two distinct problems for classic dynamic approaches, which miss the generalization that anaphora is possible whenever the antecedent referent exists in in the local context, and they encounter a lookahead problem.
The paper presents an intensional account of anaphoric accessibility, providing a unified analysis of anaphora with antecedents under negation and non-veridical operators, including cases with double negation, bathroom-disjunctions, and modal subordination.

That sounds nice! When is it?
Could a discourse be negative without explicit negation? The answer will *SHOCK* you! Read "Negativity without negation" (ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/007...) #semantics #pragmatics #anaphora #negation #ellipsis
