Travel like this has a long spooling time and a relatively long cool down while the drive vents excess heat and dumps spent fuel. The Skip Drive was named (Jokingly) when an engineer mentioned that he was glad that it covered so much distance, since he wanted to skip most in-system travel.

The Skip Drive is the long range version of the Pulse Drive. Similar to the Pulse, the ship is shunted into a pocket space, before reappearing at it's destination. However, the distance traveled is measured in light years, rather than light minutes.

Speed of a Pulse Jump is measured in Light Seconds/Minutes/Hours. The Pulse Drive was named for the distinctive, rapid "Thump-Thump-Thump" that the drive makes as it produces rifts and drags the ship through them.

-Pulse Drives- create short and temporary pockets of space which the ship travels through, one after another to move the ship over relatively short distances. The ship travels through a short distance of a pocket space and reappear at a point in real space, before jumping through another pocket.

FTL: SKIP DRIVE AND PULSE DRIVE

Ships and devices that utilize FTL (At least, for the sake of Humanity) use Skip Drives and Pulse Drives.
