The Bar is such a funny institution because they (the judges) govern the behavior of their peers (attorneys), amounting to an inherent and neverending conflict of interest.

It's a power imbalance that cannot be resolved. Judges will protect judges and attorneys deal with it because they have to.

Rümeysa Öztürk, Tufts University grad arrested by ICE agents last year, returns to Turkey - The Boston Globe The government and Öztürk’s legal team have jointly moved to dismiss her immigration proceedings.

“That Rümeysa felt she had to return to Turkey to escape the shadow of state violence says everything you need to know about the state of free speech and academic freedom in this country,” said Ramya Krishnan, an attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/04/17/m...

If you're keeping score a majority of Cuban-Americans (I am one) want the US government to:

- Attack the island militarily
- Support free trade + commerce everywhere except with the island
- Crack down on immigration of all kinds
- Except for them and only them

Where is US-Kuwaiti journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin? • FRANCE 24 English YouTube video by FRANCE 24 English

It’s absolutely outrageous that U.S. journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been jailed in Kuwait for six weeks for reposting publicly available, verifiable information.

The @state-department.bsky.social should leave no stone unturned until he is safely back home.

So glad this story is gaining traction & wanted to highlight that @andrewdeck.bsky.social at @niemanlab.org broke the news that NYT/Guardian/USA Today were blocking IA earlier this year. Encourage all to read: www.niemanlab.org/2026/01/news...

Uthmeier wants children of undocumented people (US citizens in many cases) not to count for the census. He worked in the first Trump administration on the push to ask the citizenship question for the Census.

He was appointed AG by DeSantis and is facing his first election in November.

While the president is out here beefing with the American Pope I can't help thinking of something.

Pope John Paul was Polish. He visited Poland in 1979 and the social movements that formed around that visit, including the Solidarity labor union, directly led to the downfall of the communist system.

These numbers are going to destroy the country we thought we knew and it will not take very long. The realm of possibilities in the US is getting narrowed every day this is reality.

My cousin works in the fertilizer business (sodium bicarbonate) and just did sales trip through Alabama. She told me that virtually everyone she spoke to in deep, deep red areas were all sorts of frustrated with the Trump Administration.

They were just getting a hang oh tariffs, then it's the war.

I'm also just jealous that there's so much public space in Budapest. Every clip is like thousands and thousands of people in a square or a plaza. Related is the entire outcome of this election. Movements need spaces in which to move!

A very big infrastructure-of-democracy problem in much of the US.

for sure, congratulations to magyar. but the real heroes imo are those in civil society & journalism & rank-and-file opposition & academia who have fought against the disintegration of rule of law, the weaponization of the courts/media, & so much more for so long. 🇭🇺

When students at the University of Florida protested when Sasse was appointed as interim president, Sasse made a policy change to silence them and ban the student protests.

He is the bad thing he is describing.

Trump's deportation blitz last fall evokes painful memories of Latin American 'disappearances' Neris González, who was captured and brutally tortured in El Salvador decades ago before moving to Chicago, worries that the U.S. could eventually head down a similar path. To avoid that, Ariel Dulitzky, a human rights expert says, “We need to do more documentation of what happened… [so it can't]…

Though President Trump's deportation blitz appears to have eased up, it has left a lasting impact on many here in Chicago. For some, it dredged up memories of people vanishing around them.

The legal term is "Enforced disappearance." chicago.suntimes.com/immigration/...

Using your debt, your search history, and your private data to decide how much you’re worth? Hell no.
This is what happens when technology is built to serve profit instead of people.
This is why every worker needs a union.

It doesn't even matter if what they say is accurate because you know it's just spin to sell the next war. Israeli society is pathologically addicted to war. War has become the main pillar of the state.

Saw an opinion poll today that 80% support ethnic cleansing Gaza. This is just extremely bleak.

All my thoughts are going out to Lebanon as the Israeli campaign has dramatically increased after the "ceasefire" was called.

Also important to keep in mind that Israel violated the 2024 "ceasefire" with Hezbollah in Lebanon literally thousands of times before the current conflict.
